“It was a great way to start off our season,” said head coach Joey Moore after the March 12 event. “We have a lot of young guys on the team this year and it was good to get them some real meet experience.”
He added: “It was also nice this week to finally get some good weather and finish it off with a victory against Clover.”
Some of the Cougars’ top performers were Jamar Griffin, Kyron Schrouder, Kamian McClain, Ben Watkins, Colt Parker and Shaq Harris.
“Our shot put and discus throwers were unable to compete because Clover’s throwing areas were still under construction,” said Moore.
Griffin said he felt good about winning the 100-meter event.
“I didn’t think I had it in me, but this time I pulled it out. I’ve won the 100 meters a couple times before,” he said.
He added: “I was kind of worried at first but I made it to the line. That’s pretty good.”
As a sprinter, Griffin said coming into the race requires confidence and and self-motivation.
“You always practice hard,” he said. “I just do what I have to do, work hard, try to do my best and try to win the state this year.”
