Cougar baseball team off to roaring start

The York Comprehensive High School baseball team, under first-year head coach Eddie Tisdale, have already beaten No. 9 Rock Hill and No. 5 Northwestern in Region 3-AAAA games.

In a 4-3 win over Northwestern, Hunter Horne picked up the win. Harrison Childers had a double and two RBIs against the Trojans.

John Moorefield was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs against Northwestern.

Adam Hoffman had a productive game at the plate, with a double and two runs scored.

Ryan Gilbert picked up the win in a 3-1 victory over the Rock Hill Bearcats, hurling 6 and 2/3 innings and limiting Rock Hill to a single run. Horne picked up the save.

The Cougars were led by Childers with a triple and three RBIs. Aaron Harper was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Hoffman and Moorefeld each scored a run.

The Cougars play Friday at Nation Ford in a Region 3-AAAA battle at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Cougar JV soccer defeats Chester

The York Comprehensive High School girls’ JV soccer team defeated the Chester Cyclones 3-0.

Taylor Ries and Martina Treadway scored in the victory.

On a sodden evening, the Cougars prevailed over the physically imposing Cyclones by controlling the ball and the tempo of the game. Goaltender Jade Hayes easily handled Chester’s forays on her net aided by York’s defense.

The JV girls’ soccer team lost 2-0 against Northwestern High School.

The Lady Cougars lost 2-1 at Rock Hill’s District Three Stadium.

Captain Taylor Ries scored for the second time this season from a nearly perfect corner kick delivered by Amari Moore. Play by Maggie McSwain, Kyla Douglas and Caitlyn Norris kept the Cougars close in a game.

York registering for spring sports

The York Parks and Recreation Department will hold registration for the following spring programs:

▪  Girls softball 6U, T-ball for ages 3 to 4, coach pitch for ages 5 to 6 and machine pitch for ages 6 to 8.

Regular registration will be March 20-24 with a fee of $30 for all but machine pitch, which is $35. Late registration will be March 25-26 with a fee of $40, or $45 for machine pitch.

A copy of the child’s birth certificate must be on file with the recreation department for them to participate. Registration for all sports is at the York Recreation Center from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

York to offer youth tennis lessons

The York Parks and Recreation Department will offer beginner and intermediate-level tennis lessons for boys and girls ages 7-15.

The lessons will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays, April 13 through May 18 at the York Middle School upper tennis courts. The cost is $30 for the 6 lessons. Lessons are provided by Phil Davis.

A minimum of eight participants is needed to have the lessons, which are open to a maximum of 14 players. Registration is at the York Recreation Center on White Rose Lane from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.
