York County 4-H senior Amarillo Nivens was the high-scoring individual March 6 at the 2015 State Dairy Judging contest.
The Clover High School student has been an active 4-H’er for more than nine years, participating in the goat, dairy and horse clubs, as well as the swine project.
More than 80 4-H and FFA members competed at the T. Ed Garrison Arena in Pendleton. The participants were asked to judge four classes of dairy cattle in each of the breeds represented at the Clemson University Spring Dairy Show (Jersey, Brown Swiss, Holstein and Guernsey).
Youths must evaluate and rank the animals in each class according to an ideal standard based on breed and type characteristics. Youths must be able to defend their ranking in the form of an oral presentation to the official judge.

Clover 5K to benefit Michael Hershman
A 5K run to benefit cancer patient Michael Hershman will begin 9:30 a.m. March 28 at Clover ARP Church at 127 Kings Mountain St.
Race-day registration will be 7-9:15 a.m.
Cost is $15 for those registered without a T-shirt and $20 registered with a T-shirt. Race-day signups and T-shirts while supplies last are $25.
The event is open to all ages, but runners younger than 18 must have a parental signature. Registration: milesformichael5k.weebly.com.
Pinetuck to host golf classic
The 2015 Festival Golf Classic will be April 21 at Pinetuck Golf Club with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start.
Team entry is $240 and includes mulligans, on-course beverages and box lunch. Proceeds go to the Children’s Attention Home and the Palmetto School at the home.

Fun run, walk at Relay for Life
The second annual Hippity Hoppity Hope 5K fun run and walk will be April 11 at First Baptist Church, 102 S. Congress St. in York.
The event is a benefit for the church’s Relay for Life team, which is raising money for the annual American Cancer Society benefit.
A children’s race will begin 7:50 a.m., and the 5K will be 8 a.m. Cost is $20 for the 5K only. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society .

Head Start taking applicatons
Carolina Community Actions Head Start is accepting applications for children age 3-4 in York and Chester counties for the 2015-16 year.

Learn about On Eagles Wings
Brenda Emmons, director of development for On Eagles Wings Ministry, will speak at the noon March 31 Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Road.
The ministry is dedicated to the rescue and restoration of minor girls exploited through human trafficking, offering assistance to those still trapped and restoring those who have survived by offering hope, empowerment and a brighter future.
One of the goals of Rotary International is raising awareness of human trafficking.

4-H Dairy Goat Club forming
York 4-H Youth Development apart of Clemson Extension Service in York County is starting a new club for youths interested in learning about dairy goats.
Club members will gain knowledge about the raising and showing of dairy goats. Goat ownership is not required.
Club meetings will be 6:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month beginning April 7, at the Bethesda Volunteer Fire Station No. 1, 1705 S.C. 324 in Rock Hill.

Swine show, sale set for March 28
The 4-H/FFA Swine Project Show and Sale will be March 28 at the Chester Livestock Exchange, 2531 Lancaster Highway.
4-H and FFA members will show the hogs they’ve raised three months. Awards will be presented for Grand and Reserve Champions and Average Daily Gain winners.
The show will begin 10 a.m. and the sale should begin at noon.
This is a United Way of York County sponsored project. The Bank of York sponsors the Grand and Reserve Champion Prizes, and the York County Farm Bureau awards special prizes to participants.

Walking group meeting in Clover
The Clover Daybreak Walkers meets t 6:30 a.m. each Tuesday and Saturday in the Blue Eagle Academy parking lot on Knox Street.
The walking club, which will meet weather permitting, is for beginners but everyone is welcome to exercise and meet new people.
Registration is not necessary. Show up with walking shoes, comfortable clothing, water and sun protection. A walk leader will plan and lead each walk.
The Daybreak Walkers is a project of Live Well Clover, the town’s active-living committee, organized to grow a healthy and active Clover community one step at a time.

Lions selling directory ads
River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club is selling ad space in the phone directory that reaches more than 3,000 Lake Wylie area residents and businesses. Proceeds go to charities, including River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS.
The directory is available online and includes phone numbers for government services and officials. It also lists charities, churches, hospitals, utilities, schools, newspapers, River Hills social and services organizations, and children’s activities.
One copy is delivered to all River Hills residents and to advertisers each year.
