Sports briefs: York, Clover spring sports roundup

Clover track teams at Hillcrest Invitational

The Clover High School track teams traveled to Hillcrest Saturday to compete in the Hillcrest Invitational Meet, with the boys finishing eighth and the girls seventh.

“Both teams represented Clover very well, competing against some of the better track teams in Greenville and Anderson counties,” said Jeremy Smith, head track coach for the boys and the girls.

The following scored points:

▪  Boys: Chase Hill, 400m; Ben Eyckmans, 400m; James Westerguard, 800m; Ben Clark, 1600m; Tyler Brittain, 3200m; 4-by-400 relay team; 4-by-800 relay team; Nathaniel Liscum, pole vault; Brent Courtwright, pole vault; and Austin Malcolm, shot put.

▪  Girls: Vanna Sams, 400m; Jesse Defalco, 800m, 1600m; Jaxine Hendrickson, 100m, 400m; hurdles, 4-by-400 relay team; 4-by-800 relay team; Ann Marie White, pole vault; Erin Riddle, pole vault; and Joelle Keffer, shot put.

The CHS boys and girls track participants had their final home meet last week against Gaffney. The boys’ team lost 38-97 and the girls’ team lost 61-78.

The following won their events or scored points.

▪  Boys’ winners: Ben Clark, 1600m, 3200m; Austin Malcolm, discus; Nathan Liscum, pole vault; and 4-by-400m relay team.

▪  Scored points: Colton Ennis, Tenchi Her, Chase Hill, James Westerguard, Andrew George, Gavin Jenkins and Chase Griffin.

▪  Girls’ winners: 4-by-800 relay team; Jesse Defalco, 1600m, 800m, 3200m; Vanna Sams, 400m hurdles; Joelle Keffer, discus; and Ann Marie White, pole vault.

▪  Scored points: Jaxine Hendrickson, Rhiannon Plummer, Savannah Tetreault, Alexiz Allen, Cassie Caldwell, Valerie Francis, Renee Carter, Jordan Mackey and Erin Riddle.

York plans baseball skills competition

The York Parks and Recreation Department will hold a pitch, hit and run skills competition 6:30 p.m. March 31.

The free event, open to boys and girls ages 7-14, will be at the York Recreation Complex, 74 Fourth St. Details: 803-684-3742.

Nation Ford nudges York JV girls’ soccer, 1-0

With 30 seconds remaining in a taut match, a Nation Ford center player rocketed a shot from 25 yards out into the net to give Nation Ford the win by a score of 1-0.

York varsity girls inspired in loss

The York Comprehensive High School girls’ varsity soccer team was defeated 4-0 by regional opponent Nation Ford on home turf last week.

The defense Mo Setzer, Najha Feemster, Gabby Richardson and Anna Littlejohn – managed inspiring play, said head coach Dave Prescott.

“Their communication and teamwork led to 17 offsides calls and even disqualified a goal due to an offsides trap,” he said. He said goalkeeper Alexis Petty played an “outstanding game,” with 32 saves on 36 shots.

“Several other saves came off of corner kicks, where Nation Ford would bring the house, by packing all their tall players in front of the goal, only to be denied,” he said.

York Middle School wins Northwestern tourney

The York Middle School team won the Northwestern Middle School softball tournament Saturday.

The girls opened with a loss to Dutchman Creek, then beat Castle Heights twice. They defeated Clover and shut out Saluda Trail, which defeated the York team 4-3 last week.

York finished 4-1 for the day.

“Our record on the season now stands at 5-2,” said YMS Athletic Director Jerry Kemp. “Congrats to coach Lindsey Dessecker and our team.”

YCHS golfers fall to Gaffney

The visiting Gaffney boys’ golf team (151) defeated York (170) at Spring Lake Country Club last week.

The Cougars were led by Tucker Laney and Landon Joye with 42s, and Austin Hall and Damon Heath with 43s. Also scoring for York were Chandler Sain (45) and Tyler Ellis (49).

The Cougars played in the Stallion Invitational Golf Tournament, hosted by South Pointe High School, on March 19 at the Pine Tuck Golf Course in Rock Hill.

The varsity squad shot a 360 score for the 18-hole event and finished fifth. Scores for the varsity players were Tucker Laney (85), Austin Hall (86), Chandler Sain (92), Tyler Ellis (97) and Tripp Bryant (128).

The junior varsity Cougars’ 399 score was compiled by Chayce Blackwell (92), Landon Joye (92), Bryson Benfield (101) and Seth Miller (114).

York boys’ soccer team shuts out Lewisville

The York boys’ varsity soccer team defeated visiting Lewisville 6-0 for its second win in as many nights.

Six Cougars scored. Myles Prosser started the scoring, followed by Todd Weatherington, Evan Lewis, Jacob Espinoza, Buddy Anderson and Benji Amezcua.

Sean Walsh led the Cougars with three assists on the evening. Eric Pacheco recorded the shutout in goal.

JV boys’ soccer loses to Gaffney, defeats Lewisville

The YCHS junior varsity boys’ soccer team lost 2-0 to the Gaffney Indians.

The Cougars played tough defensively and conceded two long-range goals. York was unable to get going offensively, and missed two long-range chances to score.

York bounced back March 18 against Lewisville with a 3-0 win.

Goals were scored by Sam Harcher, Daniel Shirley and Alejandro Ruiz. Luis Hernandez and Eric Martinez added assists. Juan Angeles, Davis Lara, Matt Tillotson and Luis Perez led the defense.

Gabe Maldanado and Ladd Jackson combined for the clean sheet at goalkeeper. The boys have a 3-2 record on the season.

Lady Cougars JV softball loses to Gaffney

The junior varsity Lady Cougars softball team fell short in a nail-biting game in which Gaffney prevailed 7-4 after two innings of international overtime.

As time was about to expire, the Lady Cougars battled back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game at four.

Madison Bryant started the inning with a walk while Mallori Faris and Jessa Morgan advanced runners with singles. Ally Morales hit a triple to bring those runners in.

Clarklyn George scored Morales by hustling through on a throwing error by Gaffney. Leading the Cougars defensively was Morales on the pitching mound; Carlee Shannon had some great catches in right field.

Lady Cougars soccer defeats Gaffney

The York Comprehensive High School Lady Cougars varsity soccer team pulled out its first win of the season against Gaffney, 2-1.

Gaffney scored first with about 20 minutes left in the first half. About five minutes later, Shelby Ashe scored on an outstanding shot to the upper left 90 to even the score at one.

Both teams had several opportunities at the start of the second half until Morgan Yandel received a ball off a deflection and lofted it over the defenders and the Gaffney keeper, scoring York’s second goal with 17 minutes left.

The match continued to be hard fought until the end. Anna Littlejohn, Victoria “Scratch” Ivey, Gabby “Gangster” Richardson, Mo Setzer, Shelby “Toast” Ashe and Morgan Yandel played well individually, said head coach Dave Prescott. “The entire team played their best game so far this season.”

Goforth leads York tennis

Though the YCHS boys’ tennis team lost to Gaffney 5-1, No. 1 singles player Matthew Goforth continues to impress, said coach Rusty Graham.

Goforth beat Gaffney’s best player 6-2, 6-1

The remaining scores: No. 2 singles, Jacob Southard, 0-6, 0-6; No. 3 singles, Tyler Doan, 1-6, 2-6; No. 4 singles, Juwan Barnett, 0-6, 0-6; No.. 5 singles, Jackson Montgomery, 0-6, 0-6; No. 2 doubles, Clint Black and Ryan Gladden, 0-6, 0-6.

JV girls’ soccer defeats Gaffney

A hat trick by Taylor Ries told the tale as York’s junior varsity girls’ soccer team defeated Gaffney 3-0.

Assisting Ries were Maggie McSwain, Caitlyn Norris, Martina Treadway, Natalie Carver, Anayeli Castro and Tisrra Fryer. Rayna Koryer kept the Indians off balance with pressing attacks down the left wing.

Clover JV tennis defeats Bearcats

The junior varsity boys’ Blue Eagles tennis team flew to victory against a young Rock Hill Bearcats team, 5-0.

At No. 1 singles, Cameron Scobie prevailed 1-0. No. 2 singles, Jay Rowland, won 1-0, while No. 3 singles, Andy Brom, also prevailed 1-0.

At doubles, Garrison Love and Harry Snow won 0-0. Luke Barz scored his first career victory and an 8-2 win.

CHS tennis shuts out Rock Hill

The boys’ varsity Blue Eagles tennis team flew over the Rock Hill Bearcats 6-0.

Flying high for the Blue Eagles at No. 1 singles, Justin White won 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 singles player Thomas Summers upended his opponent in a three-set nail-biter. At No. 3 singles, senior Patrick Smith won 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 4 singles, senior Rob Long won 6-1, 6-1, and at No 5 singles, senior Garrett Smith won 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Holden McGill with Sean Elder won 6-1, 6-0. Clover improved to 2-0 in region play and 2-0 overall.
