Clover boys’ soccer defeats Indian Land

The Clover boys’ soccer team defeated Indian Land 1-0 in the Manchester Cup.

The Blue Eagles also beat Nation Ford 1-0 Friday.

Bailey Bottini’s run into the box with 16 minutes left made the difference. He lost the ball to a tackle near the penalty spot, but it fell to Manny Vargas, who drove a shot into the left corner for the only goal of the match.

No. 9 Clover, sitting atop Region 3-AAAA after the Nation Ford win, has six shutouts in 11 matches. Fernando Alpizar Ramos scored the only goal of the Nation Ford game in the second half.

York boys’ track competes at Northwestern

The York boys’ track team competed at Northwestern on March 26.

Some of the Cougars’ top performers were: Jamar Griffin, first in the 100 and 200; Kyron Schrouder, first in long jump and triple jump and second in the high jump; Ryan Enniss, first in shot, second in discus; Kamian McClain, second in 110 hurdles; and Colt Parker, third in the 400.

The team of Griffin, Dee Pendergrass, Shaq Harris and Omari Mitchell won the 4x100 relay.

Clover golf team wins over Lake Point

The Clover High School boys’ golf team defeated Lake Point 169 to 197 in a nonregion match at River Hills Country Club.

Jake Row fired a 38 to pick up medalist honors. Nate Boepple shot 39, Dalton Davis 44 and Chris Whitesides 48.

The win pushed Clover’s record to 5-2 for the season.

In earlier action, the Clover boys’ golf team beat Rock Hill 169 to 174.

Clover’s Austin Walker, Andrew White and Jake Rowe and Kevin Dittmer of Rock Hill, tied for medalist honors, each with 41s. Also playing for Clover was Whitesides, who scored 46.

Cougar golfers finish third at Fort Mill

The York Comprehensive High School boys’ golf team shot a 172 in a three-way match at the Fort Mill Golf Club.

The Cougars finished seven strokes behind Northwestern’s 165 in the March 25 match. Fort Mill was second after a three-hole playoff.

▪  York scores: Damon Heath, 41; Chayce Blackwell, 43; Austin Hall, 44; Landon Joye, 44.

In a match two days earlier at Spring Lake Country Club in York, the York boys’ golf team defeated Fort Mill, scoring 163 to Fort Mill’s 186.

▪  York’s Hall won medalist honors with a 37. Other York scores: Joye, 40; Heath, 42; Chandler Sain, 44; Tucker Laney, 44.

Clover baseball team routs Indian Land

The Clover High School baseball team defeated Indian Land 11-0 in a nonregion game at home.

Stanley Durkin picked up the win, allowing only one hit in four innings of work for the Clover team.

Cody Payne led Clover with two hits in three trips to the plate and drove in three runs. Cole Hybarger, Jimmy Marcelli and Durkin each had a pair of hits for Clover.

York tennis falls to Fort Mill, South Pointe

The YCHS tennis team traveled to Fort Mill, where the Yellow Jackets prevailed 5-1.

“We were outmanned for the most part, but my No. 1 singles player, Matthew Goforth, went through his opponent like a knife through hot butter,” said YCHS head coach Rusty Graham. “He keeps getting better and better. I am proud of him.”

▪  Scores: No. 1 singles, Goforth (6-0) (6-3); No. 2 singles, Noah Arnold (0-6) (0-6); No. 3 singles, Jacob Southard (1-6) (0-6); No. 4 singles, Tyler Doan (1-6) (1-6); No. 5 singles, (forfeit); No. 2 doubles, Jackson Montgomery and Clint Black (0-6) (3-6).

The YCHS team also fell to South Pointe.

▪  Scores: Goforth (5-7) (2-6); Arnold (1-6) (1-6); Southard (2-6) (4-6); Doan (3-6) (7-5) (10-4 TB); No. 5 singles, Juwan Barnett (1-6) (1-6); Montgomery and Black (4-6) (2-6).

York JV boys’ soccer loses 2 matches

The York Comprehensive High School JV boys’ soccer team dropped consecutive 4-0 matches to Nation Ford and Fort Mill.

“The boys had stretches of brilliance in each game but we lost our composure at a few key points and conceded costly goals,” said coach Jason Roberts.

“Our goalkeeper, Gabe Maldonado, has been playing great,” Roberts said. “He recorded 12 saves in the last two games.”

YCHS JV baseball loses nail-biter

The York Comprehensive High School JV baseball team lost another heartbreaker, this time to Fort Mill 3-2.

Fort Mill scored one run in the fifth and two runs in the seventh. York rallied in their half of the seventh, scoring two runs. The game ended with a strikeout and the bases loaded.

The Cougars were led by pitchers Caleb Clayton and Trent Alexander. Combined, they allowed two earned runs. Clayton also collected two hits to lead the Cougars offensively.

Other notable contributors were Peyton Stephenson and Jake Trotter, who each had a hit in the seventh inning. This marks the fourth loss for the Cougars by three or less runs.

York JV girls’ soccer falls to Fort Mill

The York Comprehensive High School JV girls’ soccer team was defeated by Fort Mill 8-0.

CHS girls’ soccer defeats Northwestern

The Clover High School girls’ varsity soccer team defeated Northwestern 4-3 in a Region 3-AAAA game.

The Lady Blue Eagles won the game on penalty kicks against the Lady Trojans. Laila Rojas, Alex Pletniewski, Ashton Rayano and Maura Miller each booted the ball through the net for Clover.

Clover track embraces challenge of Northwestern

The Clover High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed against Northwestern at Northwestern High School.

“Both teams fell short in the win column but we had athletes compete and improve,” said head coach Jeremy Smith.

▪  Boys’ winner: Ben Clark, 1600m, 3200m.

▪  Scored points: Will White, 1600m; Chase Hill, 400m; Brandon Demby, 800m; Tyler Brittain, 3200m; Austin Malcolm, shot put, discus.

▪  Girls’ winner: Jesse Defalco, 1600m.

▪  Scored points: Savannah Tetreault, 1600m; Defalco, 800m; Valerie Francis, 200m; Joelle Keffer, discus.

Blue Eagle baseball team scalps Gaffney

The Clover High School baseball team defeated Gaffney 9-2, with Jimmy Marcelli pitching a complete game for the Blue Eagles in a Region 3-AAAA battle.

Landon Harkey led the Blue Eagles with three hits and two RBIs. Cody Payne added a pair of hits for Clover.

York boys’ soccer shuts out South Pointe

The York Comprehensive High School boys’ soccer team won in the Manchester event in Rock Hill.

The Cougars defeated South Pointe, 2-0. The Cougars travel to Clover to play the Blue Eagles Tuesday, April 7.
