Fun run, walk at Relay for Life

The second annual Hippity Hoppity Hope 5K fun run and walk will be April 11 at First Baptist Church, 102 S. Congress St. in York.

The event is a benefit for the church’s Relay for Life team, which is raising money for the annual American Cancer Society benefit.

A children’s race will begin 7:50 a.m., and the 5K will be 8 a.m. Cost is $20 for the 5K only. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society .

Clover women plan jewelry program

The Clover Woman’s Club will have a program on jewelry and silver cleaning with a demonstration at 3:30 p.m. April 9 at Frank’s Jewelry, 115 N. Main St. Clover.

Clover students among winners at 4-H/FFA Swine Project

Madelyn Bolin, a student at Griggs Road Elementary School in Clover, won showmanship in the Cloverbud division at the 2015 4-H/FFA Swine Project Show and Sale March 28 at Chester Livestock Exchange in Chester.

Noah Dixon of Clover won the Grand Champion and the Average Daily Gain trophies.

Children purchased a feeder pig in January, raised it to market size, showed the pig and auction it at the completion of the project. Business skills, record keeping and responsibility are the skills learned in the project.

This project is made possible by grants by The United Way of York County, donations and sponsorships from the Bank of York, as well as York FFA, Clover FFA, and Chester and York 4-H.

Silver Haired council meeting April 15

The Catawba Council of the South Carolina Silver Haired Legislature will meet 11 a.m. April 15 at Highland Park Senior Center, 917 Standard St.

The group identifies issues, concerns and solutions for problems faced by seniors and serves Chester, Lancaster, Union and York counties.

Reserve seat for scholarship luncheon April 18

The Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club invites the community to its Clover High School scholarship luncheon, fashion show and auction event April 18 at River Hills Country Club.

The CLWRW Fay Bergman scholarship will be awarded to a CHS senior on the basis of need and merit. This scholarship is awarded each year to one or more students.

The event includes an 11:30 a.m. social (with cash bar), a buffet luncheon at noon, and fashion show by Chico’s and River Hills Men’s Pro Shop at 12:30 p.m. A silent auction also will be held.

Tickets cost $40 per person, with half going to the scholarship.

Kings Mountain parks to host runs

A Kings Mountain marathon and half marathons will be May 2 at Kings Mountain state and national military parks.

Races start at 8 a.m., with food vendors and music available from 10 a.m. to noon. The race covers a rolling hills course through the state and national parks.

PATH needs drivers to pick up food

PATH, or People Attempting to Help in York, a basic needs and food assistance agency, needs volunteer drivers.

The agency needs teams of two people to drive to the Second Harvest food bank in Charlotte one Friday a month to shop for groceries for the food pantry.

Clover Rotary plans pancake breakfast

The Clover Rotary Club will host a pancake supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 at First United Methodist Church, 124 Bethel St.

Tickets are $2 and can be purchased in advance at Clover Chiropractic Care, 216 S. Main St., or at the door. The supper will include pancakes, sausage and a choice of beverages.

Girls on Run celebrates with 5K May 9

Girls on the Run Tri County will hold a noncompetitive 5K run and walk celebration at 8:30 a.m. May 9 at Fountain Park in downtown Rock Hill.

More than 500 girls ages 8-15 will accomplish their goals while celebrating their uniqueness and strengths.

All runners receive a T-shirt, finisher’s medal, goody bag and post-race celebration with food, drinks and music.

Girls on the Run is a nonprofit organization that offers a 10-week positive youth development after-school program for girls in third to eighth grades.

4-H registering for day camps

4-H Youth Development of Clemson Extension Service in York County will offer day camps this summer.

▪ 10 a.m.-noon June 9: 4-H Ag & Art. Come paint farm animals and gain self-confidence. For ages 9 and older. Cost: $15.

▪ 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 10: 4-H Bread & Birdhouses. Come learn about birds, build birdhouses and bake bread. For ages 8 and older. Cost: $15.

▪ 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 11: 4-H Pasta. Learn how to make homemade pasta and sides to make a complete Italian inspired meal. For ages 8 and older. Cost: $10.

▪ 9 a.m.-noon June 22-26: 4-H Beginners Camp Sew. Learn to sew, which can open up new job opportunities. Fore ages 9-14. Cost: $30, includes starter kit.

Head Start taking applications

Carolina Community Actions Head Start is accepting applications for children age 3-4 in York and Chester counties for the 2015-16 year.

Walking group meeting in Clover

The Clover Daybreak Walkers meets at 6:30 a.m. each Tuesday and Saturday in the Blue Eagle Academy parking lot on Knox Street.

The walking club, which will meet weather permitting, is for beginners but everyone is welcome to exercise and meet new people.

Registration is not necessary. Show up with walking shoes, comfortable clothing, water and sun protection. A walk leader will plan and lead each walk.

The Daybreak Walkers is a project of Live Well Clover, the town’s active-living committee, organized to grow a healthy and active Clover community one step at a time.
