After falling behind 7-1 in the fourth inning, the Clover High School softball team defeated Rock Hill 12-8 Friday in a Region 3-AAAA game at home.

Elizabeth Edmunds, who has been battling wrist problems, made a relief appearance in the top of the fourth inning and held the Rock Hill hitters to one run the rest of the game.

“I have tendonitis,” Edmunds said after the game. “It’s inflamed. I try not to pay any attention to it.”

Head coach Shea Hall said she told Edmunds to be ready if they needed her.

“Elizabeth told me she was ready and maybe that sparked us a little bit,” Hall said. “We started hitting a little bit. Give Rock Hill credit. We dug ourselves a hole early.”

Hall added: “It should be a confidence booster. knowing we can come back. We were fortunate to get a win. I hope we can carry this into the next game. We’ve got to clean up of stuff, but a win’s a win.”

Hall said a loss would have been damaging to the team’s goals for the season.

“A loss tonight would have been devastating. We talked about good teams finding a way to win. Hopefully, we can be that good team.”

Edmunds said the team was determined to overcome Rock Hill’s early-inning success.

“It was kind of a shocker the first few innings,” she said. “We picked up our game and got into it, started playing our game.

“We talk to each other and pick each other up in the dugout. We all knew we had to do our own job to get back into the game.”

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Shania Domingue got things started with a single, then Missy Mavrogian was safe on a ground ball, leaving runners at first and second. Eighth-grader Tiffany Domingue laid down a textbook bunt, loading the bases for the Clover team.

Shania Domingue scored on an error by the left-fielder and Edmunds delivered a two-run single. Blake Wallert was safe on a ground ball, loading the bases one again.

After Hannah Curtis scored on a wild pitch, a walk to Micah Sherwood reloaded the bases, setting the stage for Marisa Harkey’s two-run single to the opposite field.

Sherwood crossed the plate on an attempted throw to second, pushing the CHS girls ahead 8-7.

The Lady Blue Eagles held on for the win as Shania Domingue had a big night at the plate.

“I think when somebody else hits, it gives everybody else a lot of confidence,” she said.

In previous games last week, Clover lost to Fort Mill 5-4 and defeated rival York 15-1.

The CHS bats came alive, highlighted by Harkey’s three-run homer, a line drive shot over the left-field fence.

“Coming off a tough loss to Fort Mill, it was good to see the bats light up a little bit,” said Hall. “I thought Kayla (Ogle) pitched well. We had different people playing today. Some JV kids we pulled up got hits.”

Added Hall: “We’re happy with the win. I’m gonna quit being so picky when we win games and try to enjoy it.”
