Lady Cougar softball defeats South Pointe

The York Comprehensive High School softball team defeated South Pointe 5-1 April 10, with Taylor Wilkerson picking up the win.

Wilkerson pitched six innings, allowing one earned run with no walks. Freshman Sydney Phillips had a strong relief effort, with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.

Kirsten Loftin had two hits in four at-bats, including a home run, with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Madeline Davis had two hits in four at-bats, including a double and three RBIs.

Destini Love had a 3-for-3 night, including a double and two runs scored.

Samantha Van Camp and Emily Necklen each hit safely and Meg McGarity scored a run.

The Lady Cougars fell to rival Clover 15-1 April 9.

“We had five or six errors in Clover’s big second inning,” said YCHS head coach Susan Lee Ballard. “They capitalized on those early on. Clover is a very strong offensive team.”

Ballard lauded the effort by starting pitcher Brittany Ervin, despite the loss.

“Our pitcher did a good job early on,” she said. “She settled down. Our defense didn’t back her up a lot of times.”

A highlight of the game for Cougar fans was the play of left-fielder Van Camp.

“Samantha made two great plays,” said Ballard. “She got the force at second from her left-field position and threw out the Clover girl at home.”

“I felt really good about making the play,” the freshman starter said. “You’ve got to be ready to make the play and set yourself up.”

Van Camp also had a good night at the plate. “I was hitting changeups today,” she said. “I waited on the pitch really good against Clover.”

The Lady Cougars are scheduled to host Fort Mill at 7 p.m. Friday at 7 p.m., with JV action slated for 5 p.m.
