Clover Optimists plan Saturday barbecue
The Clover Optimist Club will have a barbecue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18 next to Killian’s Service Center on S.C. 55, Clover.
The event will include pork plates for $8, including barbecue, slaw, chips, a cookie and bun. A 5-pound bucket of barbecue is $30, and a sandwich with chips is $4. Drinks are $1.
Walk-ins are welcome. One dollar from each plate sold will be given to Lee Killian’s medical fund. For tickets or details, call Asby Skinnell at 803-222-0177.
Sharon to host cancer patient benefit
A benefit dinner and concert for cancer patient Elaine Cheek will be Saturday, April 25 at Sharon Baptist Church.
The Riverside Boys will sing at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served between 6 and 7:30 p.m. Plates are $10, adult; $4, ages 3-12; and free, age 3 and younger.
Menu is fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, slaw, dessert, bread and tea. Eat in or take out.
Sausage biscuits and baked goods will be sold beginning at 8 a.m. at the Sharon Fire Department.
Western county NAACP to meet
The Western York County branch of the NAACP will meet 6 p.m. Thursday, April 16 at Wesley United Methodist Church. For information, call Wanda Simril at 803-684-6200.
Clover Woman’s Club plans picnic
The Clover Woman’ Club end-of-year picnic will be 6:30 p.m. May 14 at the home of Barbara Crate, 430 Glenn Road, Clover.
Members should bring a covered dish. Barbara will provide drinks and paper products. Committee chairs should bring their committee report.

Plant sale, home tour set
The Master Gardeners of York County will hold two annual events during the second weekend of Rock Hill’s annual Come-See-Me Festival.
The annual Master Gardener Plant Sale will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 25 and 1-4 p.m. April 26 at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave. Hundreds of perennials, shrubs, seedling trees, vines, bulbs, herbs and vegetables, most priced between $1-$5, will be for sale. Plants are donated by MGYC members.
The 2015 Garden Tour, featuring five homes in the Shiland Hills neighborhood, will be 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 25. Rain date is 1-4 p.m. April 26. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at any of the tour gardens or at the plant sale.
Featured gardens include: June and Dick Kay, 2643 Ashmore Court; Julia and Alan Nichols, 2518 Meredith Court; Kim and Mike Climer, 2646 Carolwood Drive; Laura and Woody Livingston, 2658 Carolwood Drive; and Russ and Doris McDonald, 1830 Overbrook Drive.
Choral society to perform
The York County Choral Society will perform Mozart’s Requiem in D minor (k. 626) at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 3 in Byrnes Auditorium at Winthrop University.
This work is one of choral literature’s most well-known masterpieces and features soprano, alto, tenor, and bass soloists along with orchestral accompaniment. Also featured in this performance will be contemporary composer Ola Gjeilo’s ethereal Sunrise Mass performed with stringed orchestral accompaniment. Additional selections by both composers will be performed by the York County Chamber Singers.

Veterans invited to open house
York County Veterans are invited to an open house from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 18 at the new American Legion, 524 Heckle Blvd., Rock Hill.
Bring proof of service, honorable discharge, DD214 or active Military ID. Those younger than age 21 are not permitted in the clubroom.
Reserve seat for scholarship luncheon April 18
The Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club invites the community to its Clover High School scholarship luncheon, fashion show and auction event April 18 at River Hills Country Club.
The CLWRW Fay Bergman scholarship will be awarded to a CHS senior on the basis of need and merit. This scholarship is awarded each year to one or more students.
The event includes an 11:30 a.m. social (with cash bar), a buffet luncheon at noon, and fashion show by Chico’s and River Hills Men’s Pro Shop at 12:30 p.m. A silent auction also will be held.
Tickets cost $40 per person, with half going to the scholarship.

Kings Mountain parks to host runs
A Kings Mountain marathon and half marathons will be May 2 at Kings Mountain state and national military parks.
Races start at 8 a.m., with food vendors and music available from 10 a.m. to noon. The race covers a rolling hills course through the state and national parks.

PATH needs drivers to pick up food
PATH, or People Attempting to Help in York, a basic needs and food assistance agency, needs volunteer drivers.
The agency needs teams of two people to drive to the Second Harvest food bank in Charlotte one Friday a month to shop for groceries for the food pantry.

Clover Rotary plans pancake breakfast
The Clover Rotary Club will host a pancake supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 at First United Methodist Church, 124 Bethel St.
Tickets are $2 and can be purchased in advance at Clover Chiropractic Care, 216 S. Main St., or at the door. The supper will include pancakes, sausage and a choice of beverages.

Girls on Run celebrates with 5K May 9
Girls on the Run Tri County will hold a noncompetitive 5K run and walk celebration at 8:30 a.m. May 9 at Fountain Park in downtown Rock Hill.
More than 500 girls ages 8-15 will accomplish their goals while celebrating their uniqueness and strengths.
All runners receive a T-shirt, finisher’s medal, goody bag and post-race celebration with food, drinks and music.
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit organization that offers a 10-week positive youth development after-school program for girls in third to eighth grades.

4-H registering for day camps
4-H Youth Development of Clemson Extension Service in York County will offer day camps this summer.
▪ 10 a.m.-noon June 9: 4-H Ag & Art. Come paint farm animals and gain self-confidence. For ages 9 and older. Cost: $15.
▪ 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 10: 4-H Bread & Birdhouses. Come learn about birds, build birdhouses and bake bread. For ages 8 and older. Cost: $15.
▪ 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 11: 4-H Pasta. Learn how to make homemade pasta and sides to make a complete Italian inspired meal. For ages 8 and older. Cost: $10.
▪ 9 a.m.-noon June 22-26: 4-H Beginners Camp Sew. Learn to sew, which can open up new job opportunities. Fore ages 9-14. Cost: $30, includes starter kit.

Head Start taking applications
Carolina Community Actions Head Start is accepting applications for children age 3-4 in York and Chester counties for the 2015-16 year.

Walking group meeting in Clover
The Clover Daybreak Walkers meets at 6:30 a.m. each Tuesday and Saturday in the Blue Eagle Academy parking lot on Knox Street.
The walking club, which will meet weather permitting, is for beginners but everyone is welcome to exercise and meet new people.
Registration is not necessary. Show up with walking shoes, comfortable clothing, water and sun protection. A walk leader will plan and lead each walk.
The Daybreak Walkers is a project of Live Well Clover, the town’s active-living committee, organized to grow a healthy and active Clover community one step at a time.
