York to host April 23 job fair

The York Police Department and Tender Hearts Ministries will present the third annual job fair Thursday, April 23 at the York Recreation Center on White Rose Lane.

About 30 employers have committed to participate, including staffing agencies, manufacturing companies, retail businesses and restaurants. Many manufacturing companies are using staffing agencies to hire their employees, so several of them have been invited as well.

The fair, which attracted about 400 job seekers in each of the past two years, will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23.

Tender Hearts will offer services to those searching for jobs, including clothing and information about interviewing and job hunting.

Ainslee Moss, administrator with Tender Hearts Ministries, said the agency is seeing a continuing need for jobs.

“We still see a lot of people out of work,” she said.

She said those attending the job fair can go through a 20-minute class on job hunting and interviewing tips, to be presented by a representative from Bank of America.

They also can get a free haircut, free interview attire and have lunch. Free hot dogs, chips and water will be provided by Elevation Church.

“Last year, we had multiple people that were hired on the spot,” Moss said, adding that some employers did not require background checks and were able to hire immediately.

Moss said the job fair gives residents hope that they can find jobs, although some may have to look outside the York area.

“There’s not a lot of jobs here, and this is bringing in companies from Charlotte, Chester, Lancaster, other places that are local and are allowing our York residents to see that they may just have to drive a little bit,” she said.
