The York Recreation Complex has long been a talking point among visiting fans, and Monday night was no exception.
Several out-of-town spectators attending the Dixie Minors District Baseball Tournament in York last weekend spoke in glowing terms of the York facilities and rec staff organizers.
Angela Stevenson, whose son, Jaron, plays for the Lancaster Al-Stars, was impressed with what she saw. “The fields are lovely,” she said.
Stevenson said facilities like York mean a lot to the players and the fans.

“It’s a nice location, no trouble parking,” she said. “The tournament is well organized. Everything is going along smoothly, which is a credit to the York Recreation Department.”
Recreation director Carolyn Leake said the recreation staff prides itself in meeting the needs of visiting and local fans.
“It’s a lot to prepare for,” Leake said. “We have to take care of concessions, admissions and make sure we have a clean facility.”
The participating teams in this year’s region tournament include Blacksburg, Union, Lancaster, Lewisville, Gaffney and host York.
Leake said maintaining the playing fields year-round is a top priority.
“The drainage systems we have at the fields are among the best,” said Leake. “We took a break from rainfall Saturday and kept playing. Our field maintenance crews apply Urethane to the fields, a process that treats the playing surfaces.”
Leake said the recreation department has a lot going on, in addition to hosting this week’s region tournament. “The gym floor is being replaced at the Yor Recreation Center,” she noted. “The original floor is being rebuilt.”
The rec director assures that there is no let up. “With all of the spring and summer activities, youth football registration begins next,” she said.
