Master Gardeners plan garlic sale
The Master Gardeners of York County’s annual garlic sale will be noon Aug. 7 at the Learning Center at Glencairn Garden, 835 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill.
The sale follows the First Friday in the Garden program, “All About Spiders,” which begins at 11 a.m. and is open to the public.
Each year master gardeners plant and harvest several types of garlic, using different varieties to determine which grow best locally. Varieties this year are: Inchelium Red, Lorz Italian, Creole Red and S & H Silver.
Prices range from 50 cents to $2.50 per bulb, with most between $1-$1.50.
Master gardeners will be available to discuss methods for growing and preparing garlic.
Second Harvest plans Friday hunger site
The Second Harvest Partners, sponsored by Providence Presbytery, will have a hunger relief site 9 a.m. Friday, July 31 at St. John Baptist Church, 3726 Woodlawn St., Sharon.
Volunteers will distribute food to recipients who meet USDA eligibility income guidelines. For information, call Catawba Area Agency on Aging at 803-329-9670.
Allison Creek Bluegrass to resume
Allison Creek Bluegrass at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church near York will resume its Bluegrass Shows on Thursday, Aug. 6.
Doors open at 6 p.m., concessions including hot dogs and hamburgers go on sale at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. The show is free and the band is Bluegrass Travelers.
Enter by July 31 for livestock show
The 2015 York County Fall Livestock Show will be held Sept. 4-5 at B&S Farms, 3350 Armenia Road, Chester. Youth registration is open until July 31.
Youth exhibitors must be South Carolina residents and a member in 4-H, FFA or Junior Breed Association ages 5-19 as of Jan. 1 to participate.
Sept. 4 shows are Pullet at 5 p.m. and Meat Goat at 6 p.m.
Sept. 5 shows are Sheep at 9 a.m., Horse at 10 a.m., Beef at 11 a.m. and Dairy at 2 p.m.
Entries postmarked after July 31, but between Aug. 1-15, will be charged an additional $15 fee per animal. Forms are available at clemson.edu/york.

4-H volunteers needed in York County
4-H Youth Development, a part of Clemson Extension Service in York County, is seeking 4-H volunteers for the new club year.
The 2015 South Carolina 4-H Volunteer Symposium will be 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at Benedict College School of Continuing Education, 111 Doctor’s Circle, Columbia.
For those who are interested in becoming a club leader or who just have a few hours to invest, York County 4-H has jobs for adults and teens who would like to make a difference in their community.

Library plans book sale
The Friends of the York County Library summer book sale will be July 30 to Aug. 1 at First ARP Church gymnasium, 201 E. White St., Rock Hill. Thousands of books will be for sale at $2 per inch.
DVDs and audiobooks will also be for sale. Opening night for Friends members will be 4 to 7 p.m. July 30. Memberships will be sold at the door for $15, individuals and $25, families.
The sale will be open to the public on 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 31 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1. All items will be half price on Aug. 1. Proceeds go to York County Library programs. For information, go to www.yclibrary.org or call 803-981-5837.
Therapeutic riding center seeks volunteers
RideAbility Therapeutic Riding Center in Clover welcomes new volunteers. No experience is necessary; training is provided.
The center helps families of children and adults with special needs build and improve strength, balance, core stability, focus, attention and increase confidence and self-esteem with facilitative interaction with horses and riding.
RideAbility also serves veterans with its Equine Services of Heroes Program.
Anyone who is interested in participating in the 2015 fall program for children and adults with special needs, the Equine Services for Heroes or the riding program can email rideabilitysc@gmail.com. Space is limited
Sponsors, including individuals, churches or clubs, are also needed to provide financial support for children and adult riders and veterans.
Animal shelter needs volunteers
The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter.

4-H compiling alumni directory

Lions offer veterans program
The River Hills/ Lake Wylie Lions Club will offer a new program, “Involve a U.S. Veteran,” which waives the club’s traditional $40 fee for retired or honorably discharged personnel from the U.S. military.

PATH needs drivers to pick up food
PATH, or People Attempting to Help in York, a basic needs and food assistance agency, needs new volunteer drivers.
The agency needs teams of two people to drive to the Second Harvest food bank in Charlotte one Friday a month to shop for groceries for the food pantry.
