Clover’s Good Things resale store gets an update
Good Things Consignment and More in downtown Clover recently opened with an updated look and some new merchandise.
Clover sisters Carol Maroska and Patsy Turner, who opened the store in 2001 and moved to the Main Street location a year later, wanted to give the store an update.
“We have such a loyal customer base and we get such great comments from them when they come in,” said Maroska, 64. “They say it’s clean and beautifully arranged, and some of our ladies come in two or three times a week. They call it shopping therapy.”
The shop, at 104 S. Main St., was closed in late June for about 10 days, Maroska said. During that time, she said, the shop got a fresh coat of paint and new lighting. Some customers feared that it had closed, but Maroska said that was never the case.
Maroska said the shop has expanded its jewelry lines and added a unique display of carved walking sticks and canes to appeal to male shoppers. However, she said, many female shoppers seem to like the canes, too.
There’s also a new line of back-to-school book bags and backpacks for students of all ages, she said, and monogramming is available.
“You won’t find many consignment stores in small communities that stay open this long,” she said of their 14-year history. “It’s just a way for us to continue to support our community and our customers.”
The 4,000-square-foot store has always been divided into two areas. One side features upscale women’s clothing and accessories, including shoes and handbags and sterling silver jewelry.
The other side of the store is for housewares and home accessories, including small furniture pieces, bedding, dishes, glassware, popular Root candles and buttermints.
“People come in just to buy our buttermints,” Maroska said. “They are really, really good, and we constantly have to reorder them.”
Maroska retired from Wells Fargo in 2014 after 40 years in banking, and Turner had worked for Limestone College and Sanders Brothers Construction in Gaffney.
She said they both grew up in Clover, moved away and returned to their hometown within six months of each other. “This is where we wanted to spend the rest of our lives,” she said. “We are here to stay.”
They wanted to open their own business so Turner could stop commuting, and so they could both be closer to their aging parents. So they opened the store in 2001 on Kings Mountain Street.
“We did so well that first year,” Maroska said. They bought the larger Main Street location the next year and opened after a total renovation.
Maroska said the two have enjoyed serving customers in Clover and the surrounding area for the last 14 years. “Making the store fresh and clean for them gives us great pride and appreciation for their business,” she said.
