The Bank of York Preseason Scrimmage, a prelude to the regular season football, unfolds Friday at the York Comprehensive High School football stadium.
This year’s event will showcase Gaffney and South Pointe in the first of two game-like scrimmages at 6 p.m., followed by the Cougars and Ridgeview.
The teams will play four 10-minute quarters. Admission is $6.
“We have a good lineup this year for fans attending the event,” said YCHS athletic director Steve Boyd. “There will be two games instead of one, a little bit of a change from what we’ve done in the past.
He said the gates will open at 4:45 p.m. and concession stands will be open.
“It’s a good opportunity for everybody to come out and see our football team and cheerleaders,” he said.
Boyd and Cougar head football coach Bobby Carroll thanked the Bank of York for its sponsorship of the preseason bonanza. “The Bank of York has been very good to us over the years,” said Boyd. “They support our whole educational system here in York. We’re fortunate to have somebody that takes pride in supporting the community like they do. They do a good job of promoting the event for us.”
Grier Sandifer, senior vice president for the Bank of York, shares the excitement.
“We’re looking forward to the four-team event,” Sandifer said. “It’ll be a big crowd Friday night. It’s a good couple of games and outstanding match-ups, a good situation for the teams and the community.”
Carroll said the Bank of York Scrimmage fills a void.
“The York County Jamboree’s gone,” he said. “We look forward to the event. “It’s a good opportunity for our football team.”
Carroll said he has been pleased with the Cougars’ work and commitment to the football program.
“It’s been a good preseason and preseason camp,” said Carroll. “Our guys are ready to go hit somebody. We’ve got some guys that are stepping up.”
The Cougar football team, which gained recognition with last year’s state final appearance, will open the 2015 season Friday, Aug. 21 at Sumter. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
