Seeking a third season win after last week’s 45-24 win against Irmo, the York Comprehensive High School football team will play South Pointe Friday.

The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at South Pointe.

YCHS head football coach Bobby Carroll, who built the South Pointe program before returning to his home town to lead the Cougars, knows a lot about the Stallions.

Though the Cougars defeated the Stallions 48-7 at home last year, Carroll expects a challenge Friday.

“They’ve got a good football team,” said YCHS coach. “They’re well coached and they’ve got good football players. We’re just excited to have the opportunity to play them.”

Added Carroll: “We’re just gonna line up and play the best game we can play.”

South Pointe defeated Rock Hill 33-21 last week.

Against Irmo, York quarterback Cameron McKinney, who had 28 of 32 pass completions for 261 yards and two touchdowns, got the Cougars on the board with a 1-yard TD toss to Kamian McClain.

The YCHS team also scored with 5-yard TD runs by Wally Wilmore and Antonio Hardy.

Other Cougar scoring included Brandon Garvin, 10-yard run; Paul Moore, 6-yard run; Wilmore, 1-yard run; Prosser, 30-yard field goal. Prosser also made all of his point after attempts.

Nick Sturgill had seven solo tackles, eight assists, two quarterback pressures, three third-down stops, three fourth-down stops, one big hit, one interception and one tackle for loss.

“I am proud of our kids,” Carroll said.

He said that McKinney’s quarterback play enabled the coaches to use Wilmore at multiple positions. Wilmore had seven receptions for 124 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

“Wally is a great player,” said Carroll. “We just want to move him around all over the place and see what happens.”

Carroll also recognized Sturgill for his defensive play. “Nick’s a real active player and a two-year starter,” said Carroll. “His interception was huge in setting up another scoring opportunity.”

Carroll lauded the team’s work ethic.

“The kids work extremely hard,” he said. “I’ve really got to give a lot of credit to our assistant coaches. They work their butts off preparing these guys mentally and physically for the game at hand.”
