Sports briefs for Sept. 10

Cougar football award winners announced

The following Cougar football players of the week were named. They are: Offensive Player of the Week is Wally Wilmore, 144 all-purpose yards, 26 rushing, 31 passing, one touchdown, 87 receiving; Offensive Lineman is Ryan Enniss, graded 92 percent, three knock downs; Defensive Lineman is Devionne Chalk, eight tackles, one quarterback pressure, one blocked kick, one sack, two tackles for loss; and Defensive Player of the Week is Zy McClinton, 13 tackles.

Clover team playing winning volleyball

The Clover High School volleyball team defeated North Central, Spring Valley and South Pointe, with a lone loss to Lancaster.

Senior Savannah Garrigan is leading the team in assists and senior Logan Richardson leads the team in kills and blocks.

The Lady Blue Eagles host Northwestern Thursday, Sept. 10, with varsity action at 6:30 p.m.

YCHS swim team competes in Upstate Invitational

The York Comprehensive High School swim team finished 10th at the Upstate Invitational Tournament.

Jessica Myers finished second in the girls’ 500 freestyle event. The girls’ 200 free relay team of Ariel Prescott, Jessie Durflinger, Anna Littlejohn and Jessica Myers, finished sixth and have a South Carolina High School League consideration time of 1:56.08.

The boys’ 200 free relay finished in 12th place. This relay consisted of Dylan Reed, Sam Ferguson, Garrett Johnson and Seth Miller. The Cougar swim team will prepare this week for its meet on Thursday against Clover.

YCHS girls’ golf team finishes with best team total

Y The York Comprehensive High School girls’ golf team traveled to Cherokee National Golf Club to take on Gaffney.

The girls ended the day with their best team total of the season. The team was led by Sarah Smith’s 38, Amiyah Starnes, 49; Tori Thompson, 55; and Lani Hughes, 57.

“Lani Hughes, a seventh-grader playing her first match ever, played very well, so a special shout out to her,” said head coach Dillon Barrett. “We finished with a team total of 199, which was six shots better than our lowest score of the season.

“However, Gaffney played their best golf of the year and had four very solid scores to post a team total of 171.”

Said Barrett: “There are still many things for all the girls to improve on. I am pleased and proud of the progress the girls have made since Monday of this week. I look forward to continued improvement the rest of the season and making a push at the region tournament in October.”

Lady Cougar tennis team loses to Northwestern

The Lady Cougar tennis team hosted Northwestern last week.

“It was a long match and, of course, that means it was very close to the end,” said head coach Rusty Graham “We barely came up short but went down fighting. Our overall team is certainly better than it has been in recent years and we are competing better with some of the powerhouses of girls’ tennis.”

Here are the scores: No. 1 singles, Andjela Todorovic, 7-5, 6-1; No. 2 singles, Heather Bomar, 4-6, 4-6; No. 3 singles, Kaitlin Pruitt, 5-7, 2-6; No. 4 singles, Mikayla Madden, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 TB; No. 5 singles, Ally Morales, 4-6, 2-6; No. 2 doubles, Gracie Arnold and Emma Patterson, 2-6,3-6.

The Lady Cougars travel to Nation Ford Thursday, Sept. 10 for a 5 p.m. match.
