Western county NAACP to meet

Clover Woman’s Club to mark 65 years

The Clover Woman's Club opened their year with a Sept. 10 membership tea at the home of Kay Vrooman.

The club was founded 65 years ago, and members plan to celebrate the founding all year and host a special tea in the spring.

Activities for the year were discussed and guests were introduced. Charter members present at the meeting were Adele Edmunds and Peggy Robinson.

CHS grad and author to be at children’s book club meeting

Main Street Children’s Museum, 133 E. Main St., rings in the new school year with the return of the OWL (Our Wee Literature) Book Club.

The children’s book club will meet at 3 p.m. Sept. 20. Author and illustrator of “The Adventures of Sammy” Jonathan Miller will tell the story of Sammy. Miller, a Charleston resident and Clover High School graduate, will be available for book sales and signing following the program.

The OWL Book Club also has a read-ahead-book program for families. This month’s book is “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae. During the OWL Book Club, children can talk about the stories and do book-themed activities involving movement with music and craft time in the upstairs classroom.

The next OWL Book Club is Nov. 15 with Melinda Long, author of “How I Became a Pirate” and “Pirates Don’t Change Diapers.” On Feb. 7, the club will feature Julie Murphy, author of “What If We Were All Gray.”

CHS Interact Club to speak in Lake Wylie

The Clover High School Interact Club will present its community service plans for the 2015-16 school year at the noon Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting Sept. 22 at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church.

The Lake Wylie Rotary sponsors two students to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards leadership development program run by Rotary.

Historical groups holding joint meeting

York County Genealogical & Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in a joint meeting with Yorkville Historical Society in the Jane Spratt Room at the McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., York.

Professor to speak at Republican club meeting

Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club will meet Sept. 25 at River Hills Country Club with guest speaker Winthrop University political science professor and political commentator Scott Huffmon.

Huffmon directs the Winthrop Poll Initiative, a long-term survey initiative designed to keep public policy makers across the country in touch with the attitudes and opinions of residents in South Carolina and the entire Southern region. It also serves to inform South Carolinians, and Southerners as a whole, of the opinions and views of their neighbors. His commentary on poll results, South Carolina politics, and Southern and national politics have been featured in national and international news outlets.

Following an 11:30 a.m. social with lunch and speaker at noon, a question-and-answer session will be held.

Cost of the meeting luncheon is $20 per person. Make reservations with or without lunch by calling 803-831-1814 by Sept. 22. The meeting is open to the public, both men and women.

Allison Creek Bluegrass to be Thursday

“Every Now and Then” will be featured at Allison Creek Bluegrass 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17 at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church, S.C. 274 and Allison Creek Road near Lake Wylie. Doors open at 6 p.m. with concessions available at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free; a love offering will be taken.

Head Start openings available

Garden series to begin

The Clemson Extension Service in York County in partnership with the Ccity of Rock Hill will host the 4-H Come Grow With Me in the Garden series for ages 6-14, September-December at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill.

Classes will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. one Monday each month. Cost is $65. Students will learn natural environment, horticulture, vegetable gardening and leadership through creative activities and a service project. Girl Scouts seek food donations for CAAC

Girl Scouts in York County are kicking off their 2015-2016 season with a Keep It Local: Feed The Need In Our Community food drive to support Clover Area Assistance Center.

With more than 80 troops in York, Tega Cay, Fort Mill and Lake Wylie, Girl Scouts are requesting nonperishable food donations to be dropped off at businesses through Sept. 26. Donations will be picked-up and delivered Sept. 26 by the Scouts to CAAC.

Donations may be dropped off at: Victory Custom Golf, 4543 Charlotte Highway, No. 7; Echo Consignment Boutique, 164 Highway 274; Anytime Fitness, 125 Evergreen Road; Lake Wylie Crossfit, 4094 Charlotte Highway; and OmYoga in Fort Mill, 936 Market St.

“CAAC is the perfect choice for our troops,” said Jennifer Spitzer, community service coordinator for York 2 Girl Scouts. “We know there are many families and children in need here in our own backyard, and CAAC is able to see that everything we collect will go to the people who need it most.”

Spitzer says it also teaches the girls the value of volunteering in their community, and will develop character and leadership skills.

Girls on Run registration set

Girls on the Run of the Tri County registration is open. The fall season begins the week of Sept. 21 and ends Dec. 5 at the Piedmont Medical Center’s Reindeer Romp in Rock Hill.

Girls on the Run is a physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in third to eighth grade. With 20 sessions, the program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a 5K.

Clover Jaycees plan auto show, fall festival

The Clover Jaycees and the town of Clover will host the annual auto show and fall festival on Saturday, Sept. 19, on Main Street in downtown Clover.

Vendor applications are being accepted for crafts, children’s activities, food and more.

The auto show features more than 45 classes, with special awards presented for Best Paint, Best Engine, Best Interior, Best Club Participation and Furthest Distance Traveled. A Best of Show trophy is presented in memory of the late Dwayne Adams.

Registration for the auto show begins at 8 a.m. The cost is $20 in advance and $25 on event day.

A parking lot party featuring music by Finally Friday will be from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the Bi-Lo parking lot. Bring lawn chairs.

CAAC seeks donations

Clover Area Assistance Center seeks food and supply donations.

Items needed are canned fruits, boxed cereal and toilet paper.

Donations are accepted 9 a.m,-5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday at 1130 Highway 55 E.

Win $10,000 in Lions raffle

The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club will hold a raffle Oct. 3 with one prize: $10,000.

Only 300 raffle tickets will be sold, at $100 each. The winning ticket will be drawn at 8:30 p.m. at River Hills Country Club. The winner need not be present to win.

The raffle benefits the River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS, which offers free services or payable through patient’s insurance in the Lake Wylie area. Tickets are available at River Hills Community Association office, or by calling 803-818-1729 or 803-831-8683.

▪ The club continues to hold free eye screenings. The program, Lions Kidsight USA, uses state-of-the-art Welch Allyn camera capable of checking for six potential eye problems. Parental consent is required. If a referral is recommended for a child, printed documentation the results will be sent to the facility. Therapeutic center seeks volunteers

RideAbility Therapeutic Riding Center in Clover welcomes new volunteers.

No experience necessary; training is provided.

The center helps families of children and adults with special needs build and improve strength, balance, core stability, focus and attention and increase confidence and self-esteem with facilitative interaction with horses and riding. RideAbility also serves veterans with its Equine Services of Heroes Program.

Those interested in the 2015 fall program for children and adults with special needs, the Equine Services for Heroes or the riding program can email rideabilitysc@gmail.com. Space is limited.

Sponsors, including individuals, churches or clubs, are also needed to provide financial support for children and adult riders and veterans.

Animal shelter needs volunteers

The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter.

The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club will offer a new program, “Involve a U.S. Veteran,” which waives the club’s traditional $40 fee for retired or honorably discharged personnel from the U.S. military.
