Clover High cross-country runners compete
The Clover High School cross-country varsity boys out ran Northwestern High School and Lake Pointe Academy Sept. 23 on the team’s last home meet at New Centre Park in Clover.
Ben Clark won the race with a time of 16:50, Will White finished third at 17:32 and Leland Capps came in fifth at 18:23.
Colton Ennis was sixth at 18:26, Verzal Morton was seventh with a season’s best at 18:36, Luke Darling was eighth at 18:46 and Dakota Harvey was 13th at 19:14.
Junior varsity boys with season’s best times were James Westergard at 20:14 and Mike Kramer at 20:50.
The CHS girls came in second behind Northwestern.
Jesse Delfaco won the race in 20:31, a minute and a half in front of a Northwestern runner. Hannah Parker was second for Clover with a personal record of 22:57.
Ann Marie White was third for Clover and Trinity Moore was fourth for Clover, followed by Jax Hendrickson, who set a personal record of 25:43. Cassie Caldwell and Riley Moss finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively, for Clover.
At the end of the race, these senior runners were recognized: Caldwell, Jewel McBee, Hendrickson, Ann Marie White, Christian Ariza, Chamond Brewington and Ennis.
The seniors have plans to go to college next fall, including but not limited to College of Charleston, Clemson, Wake Forrest, Armstrong State University and Brigham Young University.
The varsity Clover Blue Eagles cross-country team will complete Oct. 3 in the Wendy’s Invitational in Charlotte.
CLover High volleyball team defeats York in straight sets
The Clover High School volleyball team defeated rival York in straight sets 25-15, 25-15 and 25-17.
The Lady Cougars built an 8-4 lead in the early stages of the first set. Makoya Jones contributed to York’s surge with a dig, a block and a kill.
Chloe Carroll had a serving ace in the early going.
The Lady Blue Eagles came storming back, building a 21-12 lead.
Brooklyn Thomas scored on a soft shot at the net and a spike. Chloe Crank was equally active, including a spike that pushed Clover ahead by three.
The Lady Blue Eagles assumed control from the outset in the second set.
Delaini Nagy had a block and a spike during the early run and CHS Logan Richrdson had a kill, expanding Clover’s lead to 12-5.
York’s Chelsea Love started the third set off with a spike as the Lady Cougars again pushed Clover in the early stages. Jones’ kill also kept it close.
“I think being on our home court with the Clover Crazies over there gave us a lot of momentum tonight,” said CHS head coach Tamara Jacobus. “We just really enjoyed the crowd
The CHS volleyball team has sustained more success than in previous years. “They’re getting better and better,” said Jacobus. “We have seniors we depend on. Our setter is a senior and we have a senior in the middle.”
She lauded the contributions of younger players. “Our juniors and sophomores are really, really playing well and growing,” she said.
Lady Cougar head coach Hannah Fairfax lauded the YCHS girls for hustle and competitive play. “They fought hard and continue to work hard,” she said.
York golf team plays Clover, Nation Ford
The YCHS girls’ golf team traveled to River Hills Country Club Sept. 23 to take on Clover and Nation Ford high schools.
“The girls played pretty well on a difficult River Hills golf course,” said head coach Dillon Barrett.
Medalist for the match was York’s Sarah Smith, who shot 43. That was followed by Amiyah Starnes at 52 and Tori Thompson and Holley Mitchell, both with 59, for a York team total of 213.
Clover’s team finished with a team total of 206 and was led by Alyssa Campbell’s 44 and Sarah Reid with 49. Nation Ford was led by Zoe Bowers with 46 and shot a team total of 215.
“Our girls have three more matches before the region tournament on October 9,” Barrett said.
YCHS cross-country team remains active
The York Comprehensive High School cross-country team began the season by hosting Northwestern.
“Though Northwestern won, the kids played very competitively against them,” said head coach Eddie Sanders. “They are working hard to improve their times.”
The boys were led by Tyler Jackson, fifth; Matt Smarr, ninth; Simon Bean, 10th; and Michael Dickson, 11th.
The girls were led by Mariah Craig, second; Victoria Burgess, sixth; Angie Mendoza, ninth; and Michelle Long, 11th.
Next, YCHS cross-country traveled to Clover.
The boys were led by Jackson, ninth; Smarr, 10th; Dickson, 12th; Parker Mumaw, 13th; and Gunner Ashford, 14th.
The boys were second, defeating Lake Pointe and York Prep.
The girls were led by Craig, second; Burgess, fourth; Mendoza, ninth; and Tiarra Fryer, 15th. The girls also finished second, defeating Lake Pointe and York Prep.
York hosted Fort Mill, Ashbrook, York Prep, and Hunter Huss on Sept. 15.
The boys finished third on the home course. They were led by Jackson, ninth; Smarr, 13th; Mumaw, 17th; and Ashford, 18th.
The girls finished second to Fort Mill, but defeated Lake Pointe, Ashbrook and Hunter Huss. The girls were led by Craig, first; Mendoza, 12th; Long, 13th; and Eve Hinkleman, 17th.
YCHS cross-country will host South Pointe at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, weather permitting.
