Briarhoppers to perform at McCelvey
The WBT Briarhoppers will perform 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 at McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., York.
The original band members first came together in 1934 to promote products for Charlotte’s radio station WBT. Today’s sixth version and award-winning family band continues the bluegrass tradition. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door.

Clover Woman’s Club meeting Nov. 12
The Clover Woman’s Club will meet at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Clubhouse, 234 Church St.
The program will be presented by Bill Wiley of the Forestry Fire Wise Program.
Spouses are encouraged to attend. After the meeting, the group will go to Courtney’s BBQ and Seafood restaurant.
Members are asked to bring monetary donations and nonperishable food items and paper products to donate to Clover Area Assistance Center. Items especially needed are canned fruits, boxed cereal and toilet paper.
The theme of the month is Gems in Jeans, and members are invited to wear jeans.
Choral society to present ‘Messiah’
The York County Choral Society will present Handel’s “Messiah” Part 1 at 4 p.m. Dec. 6 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1320 India Hook Road, Rock Hill.
Tickets are $20, adults; $10, seniors; and $5, students.
Scouting for Food Drive announced
The Palmetto Council of the Boy Scouts of America will hold the annual Scouting for Food Drive this month. Scouts from York County will collaborate with the local food banks.
On Nov. 14, Scouts will collect the donated food items and deliver them to partnering organizations.
The Scouts are asking members of the community to donate nonperishable food items. All items collected will be donated to local food banks, shelters and soup kitchens.
Collection sites and partnering groups include: Belair United Methodist Church, Clover Area Assistance Center, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, Fort Mill Care Center, Lakeshore Food Pantry, Nelly’s Creek ARP Church, PATH of York, Pilgrims’ Inn, Project HOPE Rock Hill and St Vincent DePaul’s.
In 2014, local Scouts collected more than 40,000 pounds of food.
Western county NAACP to meet

Republican women plan membership tea
The Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club invites members and prospective members to its annual membership tea from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 at the home of Peggy Upchurch Long, 14 Sunrise Point Court, River Hills.
Officers for 2016-17 will be installed. Those elected are: Peggy Upchurch Long, president; Jamie Henrickson, vice president; Barbara Haba, second vice president; Gloria Hein, secretary; and Margarett Blackwell, treasurer.
State Sen. Katrina Shealy, R-Lexington, will attend and offer remarks.

Sign up for the 4-H/FFA Swine Project
The Clemson Extension Service in York, Lancaster and Chester counties seeks youth to participate in the 2015-2016 4-H/FFA Swine Project Show and Sale.
Children ages 5-19 will obtain a feeder pig in January, raise it for three months and show the finished hog at the annual Swine Show and Sale. Participants must be age 5 by Jan. 1 and register as a 4-H member or be a registered FFA member in the Clover or York FFA Chapters to participate.
The show and sale is March 26 at the Chester Livestock Exchange in Richburg.

Historical group meeting at state park
York County Genealogical & Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 at Landsford Canal State Park, 2051 Park Drive, Catawba.
The Chester County park has a rare combination of historical and natural resources. Park Superintendent Al James and Ranger Don Oneppo will share the story of the creation of a canal in the 1820s to avoid the rocky shoals of the Catawba River. Also learn about the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily, which lives in the shoals. After the presentation, hike the trails.
Cost is $2 for park fee entrance.
Clover art gallery to host exhibit
Gallery 120 in Clover will host an art exhibition by members of the Catawba River Art Guild Nov. 2-30. A public reception will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the gallery, 120 Bethel St.
Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.

Make-A-Wish South Carolina holds volunteer interest webinars at 6:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of every month.

Therapeutic center seeks volunteers
RideAbility Therapeutic Riding Center in Clover welcomes new volunteers.
No experience necessary; training is provided.
The center helps families of children and adults with special needs build and improve strength, balance, core stability, focus and attention and increase confidence and self-esteem with facilitative interaction with horses and riding. RideAbility also serves veterans with its Equine Services of Heroes Program.
Those interested in the 2015 fall program for children and adults with special needs, the Equine Services for Heroes or the riding program can email rideabilitysc@gmail.com. Space is limited.
Sponsors, including individuals, churches or clubs, are also needed to provide financial support for children and adult riders and veterans.
Animal shelter needs volunteers
The nonprofit Friends of the York County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to help bathe, groom, exercise, socialize, train and provide adoption information for the animals, as well as assist in follow-ups, publicity, marketing and fulfilling other jobs at the shelter.
