Fort Mill park going to the dogs Sept. 24
Walter Y. Elisha Park is going to the dogs this weekend.
The seventh annual Doggone Good Time Festival, a major fundraiser for the Fort Mill-based Humane Society of York County, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the park. Those attending will be able to meet adoptable dogs available from 11 area rescues, including the humane society, participate in games with dogs they own now and take a lap around the park during the Fun Walk, said humane society chairwoman Mary Beth Knapp.
Registration for the Fun Walk, which begins at 11:30 a.m., is $25, with participants receiving an event T-shirt and goodie bag. Teams are encouraged to sign up, Knapp said.
Several veterinarians will be on-site to demonstrate pet acupuncture and CPR and pet owners will be able to get their dogs microchipped for $20. Dog trainers will hold demonstrations, and the Burmese Dancing Dogs are expected to entertain the crowd.
A variety of vendors will also be on hand giving out information and selling everything from animal care products to jewelry and woodwork. Food vendors are 521 BBQ & Grill and Paul’s Hot Dogs.
There will be a bouncy house for children, a bake sale and a raffle with first prize of $300.
“There will be entertainment for the whole family,” Knapp said. “The Burmese Dancing Dogs – I’m ecstatic to see that. And we want people to shop, shop, shop and support our vendors.”
Dogs must be up to date on their vaccinations to attend. The event will be held rain or shine. For those looking to adopt a dog, Knapp said they will not be able to take an animal home Saturday, as the various rescues will still need to carry out their application processes and do home visits.
“We’ve got several new rescues this year and we’re excited there will be adoptable dogs on site,” Knapp said.
“That’s why we have these events – to make money to save more animals,” Knapp said. “If everyone just gave $1, we’d be able to save so many pets.”
