Will it be the Yellow Jackets or the Falcons that take the victory Friday?

It’s anyone’s best guess as to which team will claim bragging rights in the annual Milltown Showdown football game between Fort Mill and Nation Ford high schools, but there also will be a focus on an important message.

Friday is host Nation Ford High School’s annual Pink Out game, a time to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a stadium full of pink, said Holly Bentley, Nation Ford Spirit Club coordinator. Recently, Fort Mill High partnered with the National Football League and the American Cancer Society in the A Crucial Catch program for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The effort is aimed at raising money to support the fight against breast cancer, including spreading awareness.

Fans of both schools are asked to wear pink in a show of unity and support.

“Students, parents and fans are going to be wearing pink in support of those impacted by breast cancer and united in support for a cure,” Bentley said.

During Nation Ford’s last home game of the season, cancer survivors will be honored and a moment of silence will mark remembrance of loved ones lost, Bentley said. Families that want to honor a survivor during the ceremony should email the person's name, years as a survivor and the name of the person escorting them during the ceremony to Nafopinkout@gmail.com.

“We try to make sure we are building awareness every October,” she said.

Last year, Nation Ford won against Fort Mill, a result Bentley said she is hoping will be repeated. However, that is not the night’s main focus.

“It is a rivalry game, but we are more concerned about promoting this cause,” she said. “Breast cancer awareness is important for the whole community.”

The game starts at 7:30 p.m., but festivities may start earlier, Bentley said.
