This week in Fort Mill History: Do you remember?
1996
▪ At Newberry, the Fort Mill High School Marching Band won the State AAA Marching Band Championship. It was the program’s 15th state title in twenty years.
▪ The Indian Land High School Marching Band won the State Class A Marching Band Championship, also at Newberry. It was their fifth state title in five years.
▪ A 16-year-old Indian Land girl, who had spina bifida, wandered away from her home. After an extensive search, she was found safe and well.
▪ As the 1976 high school football season wound down, Fort Mill was 2-7 and Indian Land was 0-9.
1976
▪ In a total team effort, Fort Mill’s Yellow Jackets throttled the Chesterfield Golden Rams 42-6. At halftime, Barbara Smith was crowned as the 1976 Homecoming Queen.
▪ Miss Patti Mills of Mars Hill College attended the National Conference on Student Legal Rights held in Kansas City, Mo.
▪ The Indian Land Warriors were 6-1-1 and 3-0 in conference play after an 8-6 victory over Lamar.
▪ “Shenandoah,” the long running New York musical, began a three-week run at the Pineville Dinner Theatre.
1956
▪ Fifth graders on the Central School Honor Roll included Polly Boyd., Andrea Caudle, Ann Rogers Cantrell, Lynn Pettus, Frances Rippy, Teresa Stroup and Donnie Shaw.
▪ The Center Theatre featured a triple feature horror show with “The Creature from The Black Lagoon,” “The Creature with The Atom Brain” and “The Monster from The Ocean Floor.”
1936
▪ Claude D. Turner, running without opposition for the Ward 4 seat on Fort Mill Town Council, received 11 of the 14 eligible votes cast.
▪ Work was progressing rapidly on the National Guard Armory that the federal government was erecting on East Elliott Street across from the high school athletic fields.
1916
▪ The Graded School Honor Roll included Elizabeth Mills, Thomas Spratt, Keebler Mills, John Cousart and Hortense James.
▪ Playing the Majestic were Bronco Billy in “The Bookseller’s Romance” and Helen Gibson in one of her daring railroad exploits.
