This week in Fort Mill history: Do you remember?

1996

▪ Town officials, including Police Chief Jeff Helms, and the motoring public were fuming because Norfolk Southern railroad shut down both railroad crossings in Fort Mill for most of a day.

▪ Tommy Phillips of Grier Street, Fort Mill, was named Mason of the Year by Catawba Masonic Lodge 56, Fort Mill.

▪ The Fort Mill School Board was leaning toward supporting impact fees for the Fort Mill School District.

▪ Fort Mill High School officials and Fort Mill Police Chief Jeff Helms were discussing the idea of putting officers in the corridors of Fort Mill High School.

1976

▪ Fort Mill and Indian Land advanced to the second round of the State football playoffs. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Wren Golden Hurricanes 21-17. The Warriors claimed a 2-0 win over the Cardinal Newman Cardinals.

▪ James G. Williams, Fort Mill, was named Water Operator of the Year by the Water and Pollution Control Association of South Carolina.

▪ Sandi Constantino and Michael Chase were selected by the Fort Mill Optimist Club to receive the Optimist Club Youth Appreciation Week Outstanding Student Awards.

▪ Weldon Potts won the Fort Mill Recreation Department Billiards Tournament by defeating Furman Williams in the finals.

1956

▪ A young Fort Mill couple, Cody Walker Potts, 19, and his wife, Loretta Moore Potts, 18, were killed when their car was struck by a car that was attempting to pass a third car near Harrison Methodist Church on the Charlotte-Lancaster Highway.

▪ Initial steps were being taken that could result in a new street being built which would connect Main Street with Clebourne Street.

1936

▪ Dr. R.L. Waddell was proposing to move his practice to Rock Hill. Dr. Waddell had practiced medicine in Fort Mill for several years.

▪ The Rev. L.B. George, new pastor at St. John’s Methodist Church, preached his first sermon at the church to a large congregation. Rev. George was also Pastor of the Philadelphia and Pleasant Hill Churches.

1916

▪ President Woodrow Wilson, Democrat, was reelected as President of the United States defeating Republican Charles E. Hughes in a tight race.

▪ Mr. Osmond Barber purchased the Culp property consisting of eight acres at East Booth and Rocky Streets in Fort Mill for $2,000. On the Rocky Street side, he was to erect a modern residence.
