This week in Fort Mill history: Do you remember?
1996
▪ The one-day filming of a feature film, “Body Count,” greatly disrupted Main Street traffic and angered the public and town officials alike.
▪ A Fort Mill man was accidentally shot by a friend at the end of Wilson Street while the pair were deer hunting.
▪ The Fort Mill Rotary Club and the Charlotte Knights donated $45,000 raised by a Halloween haunted castle event to various charities in the area.
▪ Lindsay Pettus of Indian Land received a 1996 Friends of the Library Award at the South Carolina Library meeting in Greenville.
1976
▪ The First Baptist Church established a fund to assist in the expenses incurred by Miss Susan Horton, 7, who needed a cerebellar stimulator implant.
▪ The Easy Pay Store, 202 Main Street, Fort Mill, was broken into and robbed of $1,100 in merchandise.
▪ The Grand Opening of the Ol’ Country Store on Hwy. 160 East, Fort Mill, featured Citgo gas for 51.9 cents and a six pack of Old Milwaukee for $1.49.
▪ Jeannie Harris, 17, was crowned “Miss FHA” at Indian Land High School.
1956
▪ Third graders on the Fort Mill Elementary School Honor Roll included Dianne Hill, Raleigh Bailes, Barbara Cantrell, Cathy Graham, Patsy Wright and Gloria Broom.
▪ TWIRP, (The Girl Is Requested to Pay) Days were taking place at Fort Mill High School. The boys of the school were thrilled.
1936
▪ The First Thanksgiving snow anyone in this section could remember fell on Thanksgiving Day. A few days later, a severe sleet storm hit the area.
▪ The Honor Roll of the Fort Mill Graded School included Junior Cairco, Bobby Martin, Betty Jean Neal, Robert Bradford, Sara Perry and Walter Barron.
1916
▪ In a recent meeting of Fort Mill City Council, it was decided to hire Mr. R. L. Brown of Lockhart as the night policeman for the city.
▪ Three persons from York County were committed to the hospital for the insane by the Judge of Probate.
