Letter: Tragedy waiting to happen at Pleasant Knoll Elementary School
Traffic dangerous around PKES
I continue to be amazed and deeply disturbed as I come out from Oregon several times a year and walk my two elementary grandchildren to and from Pleasant Knoll Elementary School to see the extremely dangerous task of getting them across Pleasant Road to school each day.
Last week Carol, the crossing guard, while in the crosswalk with her flag and colorful uniform, was nearly run over by a man with a pickup truck and a big smile on his face as his tires screeched closely past her. I greatly appreciate the work of York County Sheriff’s Department in sending a patrol car out this week to enforce the traffic laws there.
However, 35 mph during school hours is way too high. Most states require 15 or 20. Unless the speed limit is lowered and enforcement increased or a pedestrian overpass installed, I believe it will just be a matter of time until either a child or one of the adults who try to protect them will be killed or maimed.
