Oakridge Middle soccer teams set shutout win streaks
Soccer
▪ The Oakridge Middle School Lady Gold Eagles played cross-town rival Clover Middle on March 10. Within the first 5 minutes of play, Olivia Vogt connected with Selah Gaylor for a goal, followed a few minutes later by Gaylor’s pass to Anni Thomas, which led to another goal. The first half was closed with a second goal from Gaylor, again after a connection from Vogt. The Golden Eagles defeated the Blue Eagles 3-0.
▪ On March 10, OMS boys defeated rival Clover 4-0. Nikki Mandakovic assisted Ethan Stevenson as he scored from the left side of the pitch. By minute 13, Mandakovic assisted Brandon Malcomn to score. In the second half Mandakovic created another opportunity for Stevenson to score. Derrick Karsch assisted when Jackson Carter netted the final goal in the 57th minute. Corey Chambers and Christian Erwin manned the goal.
▪ On March 11, OMS girls beat York Middle School 5-0. Abigail Neely got a pass off to Selah Gaylor. After a few tries, Anni Thomas scored a call from a pass from Gaylor. Caroline Ringler finished out the half with a pass from Thomas. Grace Sain scored a goal on a pass from Maddie Franks. Gaylor found Janae Massey around midfield, who scored the final goal of the game.
▪ On March 11, Oakridge boys defeated York Middle School 6-0. The game started with Nikki Mandakovic assisting Ethan Stevenson in the 6th minute. At minute 28, Mitch Clark crossed it to Mandakovic, who scored. At minute 45, Cameron McPherson set up Brandon Malcomn to take the 3-0 lead. In the last 15 minutes, OMS scored three more times. The fourth goal was scored by Cameron McPherson, with an assist by Derek Karsch. Seth Curl set up Karsch in the 48th minute. The game finished with Tanner Martin assisting Curl for a finish. Corey Chambers and Christian Erwin continued their shutout season.
▪ On March 12, OMS boys’ team defeated Fort Mill Middle School 4-0. Seth Curl assisted Derek Karsch for the first goal at minute 3. At the 25th minute, Brandon Malcolm cut back as the goalie tried to tackle him and passed the ball to Tanner Martin, who finished it to take a 2-goal lead. Three minutes later, Nikki Mandakovic sent the ball to Cameron McPherson, who had just come off the bench. Grayson Love made a throw to Matthew Lerner for his first goal of the season. Christian Erwin held the box to record a full shut out.
▪ The OMS Lady Golden Eagles soccer team defeated Fort Mill 10-10 March 12. Within the first 2 minutes of play, Anni Thomas found Selah Gaylor near the goal to score for Oakridge. With a little over 16 minutes remaining in the first half, Gaylor kicked a corner kick in front of the goal, where Grace Sain headed the ball in. As the half began winding down, Janae Massey took a pass from Olivia Vogt to the goal. The pair connected again, and Massey made the final score of the first half. As the second half began, OMS played a man down to compensate for Fort Mill’s missing player. Brooklyn Gunn took a pass from a Fort Mill defender off the crossbar to the goal within the first minute. Gunn received a pass from Gaylor to take the score to 6-0. Ann Mason McConnell passed a cross in front of the goal intercepted by a Fort Mill player and tapped into the goal, giving OMS another goal. Gaylor was able to take a pass from Sain into the goal, then Sain rounded out her hat trick, taking passes from Ryah Schultz and Gaylor.
Baseball
▪ Jake Hylinski lifted the Golden Eagles to a 9-1 win in seven innings over Fort Mill Middle School March 11 at Fort Mill. Hylinski kept contact to a minimum, pitching a complete game – striking out 10 batters. Hylinski allowed one earned run, two hits and no walks over seven innings. The Golden Eagles scored all nine runs in the sixth inning. Contributing for the team were: Kolby Crepeau - 1 hit and 1 RBI, Kevin Riley - 1 hit and 1 RBI, Hylinski - 2 RBIs, and Dennis Matias, Hunter Holland, Seth Querze, Payton Barrow and Andrew Tulley, all with 1 RBI.
▪ On March 12, OMS beat Banks Trail Middle School 3-2. Billy George pitched 5 and 1/3 innings earning two strikeouts and giving up four hits. Kevin Rylie came in for relief and earned the win, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings of shutout ball. He struck out two, walked two and surrendered no hits. Jake Hylinski brought home the go-ahead run to give the Golden Eagles the lead in the sixth inning, hitting a 2-run homerun. Also contributing for the Golden Eagles were: Dennis Matias - 2 singles, Wade Birkenbach - 2 singles, Kolby Crepeau, Seth Querze and Kevin Rylie -1 single each, and Hunter Holland - 2 walks.
Softball
▪ The Oakridge team lost 10-5 March 12 to last year’s undefeated league champion York. Dakota Peters pitched. Leading the way on offense for Oakridge were: Sophia Sprouse - 2 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 run, Emily Boudreaux - 1 for 3, 1 run, and Katy Sutton - 1 for 3, double, 1 RBI.
