Club news: York County Visitors Bureau leader to speak in Lake Wylie

SAR meeting April 11 in Fort Mill

Col. William Bratton Chapter Sons of the American Revolution will meet 10 a.m. April 11 at the Fort Mill VFW Post 9138, 1442 Harris Road.

Daniel Woodruff, president of S.C. Society of SAR, will talk about “Weapons of the Revolutionary War” and provide a live demonstration of the long rifles used to defeat the British Army. Open to the public.

Both members of the chapter and the S.C. State genealogist will be on hand for those who would like to trace their Revolutionary War family history and consider joining the chapter.

Hear from county visitor bureau April 14

Lisa Meadows, executive director of the York County Convention and Visitors Bureau, will speak at the noon April 14 Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Cove Road.

Meadows’ chamber career began in 1994, serving as vice president of special event and VP/executive director of Bristol TN/VA Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau. She was promoted in 2001 to president and CEO of the Bristol Chamber, serving until April 2012. She also served as president of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce Executives.

She is a past recipient of the Business Journal’s “Forty under 40” and the 2008 Business Journal’s “100 leaders You Need to Know.” She also served as the president of the Bristol Morning Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris Fellow.

A graduate of the Institute for Organizational Management through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce/College of Charleston, Meadows is a Certified Tennessee Tourism Professional through the Tennessee Department of Tourism/University of Tennessee.

Clover students among winners at 4-H/FFA Swine Project

Madelyn Bolin, student at Griggs Road Elementary School in Clover, won showmanship in the Cloverbud division at the 2015 4-H/FFA Swine Project Show and Sale March 28 at Chester Livestock Exchange in Chester.

Children purchased a feeder pig in January, raised it to market size, showed the pig and auction it off at the completion of the project. Business skills, record keeping and responsibility are the skills learned in the project.

This project is made possible by grants by The United Way of York County, donations and sponsorships from the Bank of York, as well as York FFA, Clover FFA, and Chester and York 4-H.

The recipient of the Grand Champion Trophy and the Average Daily Gain trophy was Noah Dixon of Clover.

Women’s club to host FBI speaker

River Hills Women’s Club next luncheon is April 15 at River Hills Country Club.

Social time begins 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at 12:30 p.m. followed by the speaker at 1 p.m.

The speaker is Special Agent A. Ann Colbert of the FBI talking about what led her into the FBI, identity theft and how to become an FBI agent.

Silver Haired council meeting April 15

The Catawba Council of the South Carolina Silver Haired Legislature will meet 11 a.m. April 15 at Highland Park Senior Center, 917 Standard St.

The group identifies issues, concerns and possible solutions for problems faced by senior citizens serving Chester, Lancaster, Union and York counties.

Reserve seat for scholarship luncheon April 18

The Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club invites the community to its Clover High School scholarship luncheon, fashion show and auction event April 18 at River Hills Country Club.

The CLWRW Fay Bergman scholarship will be awarded to a CHS senior on the basis of need and merit. The CLWRW awards this scholarship each year to one or more students.

The event includes an 11:30 a.m. social (with cash bar), a buffet luncheon at noon, and fashion show by Chico’s and River Hills Men’s Pro Shop at 12:30 p.m. A silent auction also will be held.

Tickets cost $40 per person, with half going to the scholarship.

Lions need eyeglasses

The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club seeks eyeglasses.

Collection bins are located at Sweet Repeat Thift Shop in Lake Wylie Plaza, Harris Teeter at Steele Creek, Dr. Poole’s office in Clover, Food Lion in Lake Wylie, and Lake Wylie Public Library.

From Lake Wylie donations go to Columbia, then on to a recycling center where volunteers determine which glasses are reusable, checking prescriptions, cleaning, packaging and sending them to wherever they’re most needed around the world.

Mom groups meeting May 2

MOPS and MOMSnext will meet 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 2 at Christ the King Church for a Touch-a-Truck event.

The event allows children to see vehicles from heavy machinery to fire trucks and police cars. There also will be silent auction items and barbecue plate for lunch.

Girls on Run celebrates with 5K May 9

Girls on the Run Tri County is holding a noncompetitive 5K run and walk celebration at 8:30 a.m. May 9 at Fountain Park in downtown Rock Hill.

More than 500 girls ages 8-15 will accomplish their goals while celebrating their uniqueness and strengths.

All runners receive a T-shirt, finisher’s medal, goody bag and post-race celebration with food, drinks and music.

Girls on the Run is a nonprofit organization that offers a 10-week positive youth development after-school program for girls in third to eighth grades.

4-H registering for day camps

4-H Youth Development of Clemson Extension Service in York County is offering several day camps this summer.

▪ 10 a.m.-noon June 9: 4-H Ag & Art. Come paint farm animals and gain self-confidence. For ages 9 and older. Cost: $15.

▪ 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 10: 4-H Bread & Birdhouses. Come learn about birds, build birdhouses and bake bread. For ages 8 and older. Cost: $15.

▪ 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 11: 4-H Pasta. Learn how to make homemade pasta and sides to make a complete Italian inspired meal. For ages 8 and older. Cost: $10.

▪ 9 a.m.-noon June 22-26: 4-H Beginners Camp Sew. Learn to sew, which can open up new job opportunities. Fore ages 9-14. Cost: $30, includes starter kit.
