Lake Wylie fish looking good and healthy on Thursday night trail
Another tournament is in the books for weekly Thursday Night Tournament Trail on Lake Wylie.
“And wow, at the fish brought to the scales,” said Erwin Gaston, who organizes the trail with Jeremy Cabe. “The weather had a big effect on our crowd, but the crowd we had caught the fish.”
Gaston said anglers are saying the fish are shallow, and most fisherman are using jigs and plastics around boat docks.
“Hopefully this is a sign Lake Wylie has cycled through the tough fishing years and is on the upswing,” Gaston said. “The fish I see coming to the scales are healthy and look really good.”
Team Mark Leech and Tim Chapman won with a sack of five bass weighing in at 18.82 pounds.
Second place went to the team of Mike Stone and Joe Floyd with a weight of 17.51 pounds.
Several fish weighed in the 5-pound range. Bucky Helms brought in one at 5.98 pounds, edging out Donald Black and Wayne Smith and 5.97 pounds for big fish of the night.
The trail is sponsored by Academy Sports, Kangaroo Express and A-1 Adams Bail Bonds Agency.
Tournaments are help Thursdays through Aug. 27. Registration runs 5:30-6:20 p.m. at Buster Boyd Access Area. Blast off is at 6:30 p.m. and weigh-in at 11 p.m. The two-night Championship Fish-off is Sept. 11-12.
