Lake Wylie Marine Commission names newest member. Soon, another.

The Lake Wylie Marine Commission is a step closer to having a new member.

York County’s finance and operations committee sorted through three applications before picking one to fill an unexpired term.

“We approved Debi Chacharon for the Lake Wylie Marine Commission,” said Michael Johnson, York County Council member and committee chairman.

A full Council vote is needed to finalize the finance and operations recommendation.

Chacharon would fill the seat left when George Medler resigned it. The term runs through Sept. 30.

The marine commission is down two of its nine members, following the death of Robert Biggerstaff in Gaston County in November.

Donna Buff, clerk to the Gaston County Board of Commissioners, said a replacement could be named soon. That term also runs through September.

“There has not been another commissioner named, but it is on the agenda for (Jan. 23),” Buff said.

The marine commission’s executive director also is open following the retirement of Joe Stowe.

The nine-member marine commission has three representatives from each of the three counties surrounding the lake. The group makes or advises decisions ranging from no wake zones to law enforcement and other safety issues.
