Sports briefs: Clover High runners help elementary students train for 5Ks

Running

CHS XC helps out CCE athletes

Four Clover High School cross-country runners volunteered April 23 with Girls on the Run and the boys group, Let Me Run, practice 5K at Crowders Creek Elementary School. The girls’ 5K is May 9, and boys run May 16.

More than 30 elementary students participated.

Clay Rollins, CHS sophomore, ran with the first runner to show the course.

Rachel Capps and Caitie Bowman, both seniors, and Cameron Marvin, sophomore, were stationed throughout the course cheering on the runners.

All CHS students ran the last half mile with the last runner and finished together.

Girls on the Run meets every Tuesday and Thursday after school and is coached by Missie Maloney, Rachel Hester, and Autumn and Chris Brown.

Let Me Run meets Mondays and Wednesdays and is coached by Laura Self and Lisa Frascht.

Baseball

Pitch, Hit, Run contest May 9

The Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition will be hosted by Rivals Baseball 10:30 a.m. May 9 at Doby’s Bridge Park Field 2.

All kids age 7-14 are invited. There is no cost to enter or compete. Details: pitchhitrun.com.

Hall of Fame induction May 12 in Rock Hill

The York County Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate its 14th induction ceremony May 12 at the Events at Manchester, 1965 Cinema Drive.

The six inductees are: Tom Crump, Tommy Gaither, Chris Hope, Johnathan Joseph, Debora Osbourne and Ben Watson.

Tickets cost $25, available at Rock Hill/York County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Baxter Hood Center at 452 S. Anderson Road.

Bill Neely, chairman of the Rock Hill Sports Council, and Ed Thompson, director of the Rock Hill PRT, organized the York County Sports Hall of Fame. In May 1998, the first induction was held with seven inductees. The induction ceremonies continued every year until 2007. Since 2007, the event occurs every two years.

Golf

Lions tourney June 15

The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club is accepting applications for its annual golf tournament June 15 at River Hills Country Club.

Entry costs $125 per person, or $100 if paid by May 17, and includes green fees, cart, lunch and contest prizes, plus an awards cocktail party and barbecue dinner. Prizes range from $300 to $100 per team.
