CHS player makes mark in state singles
Justin White, the No. 1 singles player for the two-time Region 3-AAAA champion Blue Eagle tennis team, made a strong showing in the state AAA/AAAA singles tournament at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center near Columbia.
White, competing in the state event for the second straight year, faced a first-round opponent from recent AAA state champion Chapin. White lost the first set 6-2 but won the second 6-0, forcing a third set tie-breaker.
With the heat in the mid-90s, the Chapin player put White in an 0-5 hole.
But White chipped away at the lead and got the score at 7-8. Chapin won the next point, forcing White to defend a match point.
“With a great shot, Justin defended the match point and went on to win the next three points to win the third set,” said boys’ tennis head coach Phil Wingard. “This set Justin up for a chance to win his second round and achieve our goal of making him all-state as a CHS tennis player.
“Our only problem was he had to beat the No. 4 seed from Spartanburg.”
With 30 minutes of rest after a three-set match, White took the court and played well, battling the Spartanburg player every point and exchanging winners.
White began to frustrate his opponent, moving to a 5-3 lead in the first set.
“At this point, the match turned and Justin began to make more errors tying to go for winners to close out the match,” said Wingard. “The Spartanburg player regained his focus and took control of the match, winning 7-5, 6-1. Spartanburg realized they had dodged a bullet.”
Said Wingard: “I am very proud of Justin’s effort. He played three tough matches in very hot conditions, not getting off the courts until 4 p.m. He gave 110 percent on the court and showed he belongs among the best players in the state.”
