What’s coming in York? Almost 300 new homes and an escape room revisit among plans.

Plans on the table could lead to almost 300 new homes and future escape rooms in York.

The city planning commission will review two planned subdivisions and a zoning change involving escape rooms when the group meets Thursday night. York City Council will hear the proposals when it meets March 3.

Two agenda items involve property near the intersection of Hunter Street and South Pacific Avenue. More than 47 acres there would be rezoned and a special exception requested to allow 157 homes. An updated site plan was submitted from what Meritage Homes presented to the planning commission in November.

At that November meeting, Meritage described homes with an average price of about $250,000 according to planning commission minutes. The site is an undeveloped property surrounded by the Hunter Park, Oaks of Broadway, Barron Park and other subdivisions. The property has a creek and a sizable pond on it.

Rezoning would involve a council decision. The special exception decision will go to the city board of zoning appeals.

Another proposal would put 128 homes on Lincoln Road across from York Comprehensive High School. Requirng a special exception, that decision would go to the zoning board of appeals where a public hearing will be held.

Yet another decision involves escape rooms. In January, the planning commission heard a zoning amendment to define and allow escape rooms on properties zoned with the central business listing. The group voted to allow escape rooms by special exception, meaning they would come up for review as proposed.

Council then met and asked the planning commission to consider whether the special exception is needed or whether escape rooms simply should be allowed as a business. An applicant proposed the amendment to allow for an escape room.

Escape rooms have become a trend in recent years. Groups typically enter a themed room and try to solve clues that will allow them to escape. A Google search shows escape rooms in Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Charlotte and other area locales, including Ole York Xscapes in York that opened last summer.
