Historic celebration
Independence Day at Hightower Hall, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4, Historic Brattonsville, 1444 Brattonsville Road, McConnells. A celebration of Independence from King George takes place at Hightower Hall, the antebellum home of John Bratton Jr. Fiddlers will play tunes of liberty and freedom with open calls to dance “Sellenger’s Round” and the “Virginia Reel” on the front lawn. The grounds will be set-up with wickets and mallets for a tournament game of Pall Mall. Toys and games keep the young ones entertained while the big kids play an old-fashion ball game of Rounders. Twenty historical interpreters dressed in period clothing offer cooking demonstrations, house tours and more. Event culminates with a reading of the Declaration of Independence on the front steps of Hightower Hall at 3:30 p.m. Picnics and blankets welcome; food available for purchase. Huck’s Defeat
Reenactment of the Battle of Huck’s Defeat, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 11 and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 12, Historic Brattonsville, 1444 Brattonsville Road, McConnells. Focuses on the story of Capt. Christian Huck, a Loyalist officer noted for his “particular dislike for the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in the South Carolina backcountry or ‘rebels’ as the British called them.” Featuring more than 150 reenactors to bring this pivotal American Revolutionary skirmish to life with three battle reenactments on horseback, firing guns and cannons. Battle reenactments are scheduled for Saturday with the Stallings/Williams Battle at 11 a.m. and the Battle of Huck’s Defeat at 2 p.m.; and on Sunday at 2 p.m. - the Battle of Hanging Rock. The Sons of the American Revolution will present a memorial wreath-laying ceremony at noon Saturday. An 18th-century Worship Service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Oak Grove.
