Club news: Lake Wylie Lions raise $200 to replace stolen donations

Lions replace stolen donations

River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club replaced money stolen from a donation jar on the counter of Bagel Boat. Donations were for underprivileged children to attend YMCA’s Camp Thunderbird.

During the June breakfast meeting, a hat was passed around and $200 was raised.

A Knights of Columbus jar for Special Olympics also was stolen.

Lions honor 2 new members

At its monthly breakfast meeting June 20, the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club presented New Lion of the Year awards to two club members – David Allen and Bill Holleman – who joined within the past 18 months and got involved in charitable projects and taking on leadership roles.

Woman’s club meeting July 9

The Clover Woman’s Club will meet at 3:30 p.m. July 9 at the Clubhouse.

The club is planning the 65th anniversary year for the club. The club will celebrate the contributions of the charter members and the club’s service to the community throughout the year. All members are encouraged to attend.

Donations for the homeless school children and back the pack are always needed.

Historical society to meet in Rock Hill

York County Genealogical & Historical Society will meet at 3 p.m. July 12 at The White Home, corner of East White Street and Elizabeth Lane, Rock Hill.

The White Home is a farmhouse in downtown Rock Hill that predates the founding of Rock Hill. Five generations of the White family lived there, beginning in 1839. In recent years, it has been acquired and restored by Historic Rock Hill, a nonprofit preservation organization. They will host a tour of the home and a description of the family who lived there.

The normal admission fee will not be charged for this meeting.

Purple Heart group meeting July 15

Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 2008 Rock Hill meeting is at 7 p.m. July 15 at VFW Hall, 732 W. Main St.

All Purple Heart recipients are welcome. Call 803-367-8328 for details.

PEO awards $1,500 scholarship

The Lake Wylie Philanthropic Educational Organization Chapter awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Sydney Burrell on May 27 at the Clover High School Senior Academic Awards Program for the class of 2015.

She also was awarded the highest science award in the senior class. Burrell plans to attend the University of South Carolina and major in pharmacy.

Burrell is the daughter of Stephen Burrell and Scott Gillelan. She was named principal’s scholar, member of the National Honor Society, Palmetto Fellows with STEM supplement, junior marshal and received the softball academic award.

She played varsity softball, was named softball team captain and was in marching band and concert wind ensemble.

She has volunteered at Camp Joy as a counselor and been on an Appalachia and Wales mission teams. She was the 2015 CHS homecoming queen.

The PEO promotes educational opportunities for women. Nearly 70,000 women have benefited from the group’s grants, loans, awards and scholarships.

4-H creating alumni directory

4-H Youth Development, a part of Clemson Extension Service in York County, is compiling a directory of 4-H alumni.
