Letter: Learn history of slavery

Our elected officials are folding like cheap lawn furniture over the issue of the flag.

The problem is not so much with the flag itself, but the fact that this is only the first of many steps that will likely be used in attempts to remove all reference to the Confederate cause. And, each time will be met with less and less resistance. It seems to make no difference that this is the nation which freed the slaves…one hundred and fifty years ago…and has invested trillions of dollars as reparation to their descendants. For what? Not one in a hundred has any idea that their own people sold their ancestors into slavery, or that any of them could just as easily have wound up at one of the other slave destinations in northern Africa, where many may still be enslaved today.

We are long overdue for a course on the history of slavery.
