School notes: Palisades Episcopal School names board chairman

PES names board chairman

Palisades Episcopal School names Kevin Dunlap as chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Dunlap replaces founding chairman Peter Crane Browning, who served since the school’s inception in 2007.

Dunlap is a trial lawyer and a partner with Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein in Charlotte. He has been listed in the Top 25 lawyers in South Carolina by South Carolina Super Lawyers. He also is recognized in Woodward/White’s The Best Lawyers in America. He received his law degree from Vanderbilt University and was the recipient of the Stanley D. Rose Award for writing. He was associate editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law. He received his undergraduate degree from Furman University, where he was the recipient of the General Excellence Award presented by the faculty at graduation and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

The Palisades Episcopal School Board of Trustees also includes: Charles Davidson, president of Moorland Consulting Group; Jim Fussell, retired partner for McGladrey & Pullen; Jordan Gross of Carolina Panthers; Stephanie Jackson, DDS, Steele Creek Pediatric Dentistry; Aaron Kneas, managing director of Creative Health Capital, LLC; Fred Lowenbach, retired instructor for Johns Hopkins University; Steve Pollak, owner of Paul Mitchell the School; Mark Slaven, retired CEO of Tolt Service Group; John Williams, president and CEO of Domtar; and Woody Winslow of US Airways.

Palisades Episcopal School is an independent day school with a mission to provide a Christ-centered classical education challenging the mind, body and spirit. Located in the Palisades Community in southwest Mecklenburg County, Palisades Episcopal School has 165 students, from North and South Carolina, in grades JK-eight.

USC Upstate posts dean’s list

Joshua Benfield and Paige Wallert, both of Clover, made the dean’s list for spring 2015 at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

To be eligible, freshmen students must earn a 3.25 or higher and be enrolled in at least 12 course hours. Upperclassmen must earn a 3.5 or higher and be enrolled in at least 12 course hours.

Lions offering $3,000 for exchange program

The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club is offering a new award for Clover High School students.

A member of the rising class of 2017 can earn up to $3,000 in airfare and tuition to participate in the 2016 S.C. Lions Summer Youth Exchange, which provides an opportunity to promote cooperation through friendship among American and international future leaders.

Host blood drive, earn scholarship

▪ High school and college students can win a scholarship by hosting an American Red Cross blood drive through Aug. 31 through the Leaders Save Lives program.

The Leaders Save Lives program encourages community-minded 16- to 24-year-olds to host blood drives. Students who participate as a blood drive coordinator are eligible to win a scholarship up to $2,500 for higher education and to earn a gift card.

Ten scholarships will be awarded via a drawing to students who achieve 100 percent of their blood drive collections goal. All students who achieve the designated blood drive goal will receive an electronic gift card to giftcertificates.com.

▪ The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is calling on high school and college students for its seventh annual Students Saving Summer Scholarship Program.

Students who organize and host a successful blood drive with CBCC through Sept. 30 have the chance to earn scholarship money for their secondary education. The top five producing blood drives each receive a $1,000 scholarship from CBCC. Since 2009, CBCC has awarded more than 300 scholarships and grants.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must choose a location, recruit donors and collect a minimum of 25 units of blood. Each student will be paired up with a CBCC representative who will provide assistance with planning the blood drive. The CBCC scholarship donation must be directly transferred to the college, university or other learning establishment of each winner’s choice.
