Clover coach returns from mission trip

Clover High School head football coach Chad Smith returned from a church mission trip to Poland earlier this month, eager to share his experience.

Smith, who went with three former high school teammates on a trip with Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Easley, said they connected with coaches and players for a team in the Polish Football League.

“We got to watch a game and we practiced with them,” he said. “With the relationships we developed with those guys, I hope I can make this an annual or biannual event and bring some coaches with me.”

Smith, whose group was teamed up with three International Mission Board teams in Krakow, Poland, said he learned that the Polish team members love American football.

“The guys competing in the Polish Football League are from 18 to 36 years old,” he said. “We spent quality time with some great people and formed real good relationships. The head football coach there was fantastic.”

He said everyone in Clover was supportive of his mission trip.

“To me, that means a lot,” Smith said. “I’m a football coach but I want my players to see me as a father, as a husband and a man. I want to foster good fathers, good husbands and good men.”

Smith said the mission team also worked with English tutoring groups in Krakow and met with people at two churches there. He said he looks forward to his next mission trip.

“When you go overseas for anything like that, the people are great,” Smith said. “It is an experience I will never forget.”
