Clover packs fun into school supply distribution

Clover School District will open its second annual back-to-school bash to the entire community.

“We really want to highlight our backpack distribution,” said Marguerite Brown-Canty, district attendance officer. “We are really looking to have a community-wide event. It’s for those in need absolutely, but it’s also an invitation for all students to come out.”

Instead of Saturday morning like last year, this year’s kickoff event will be 5-7 p.m. Aug. 14 at Memorial Stadium. The free event will be in conjunction with the Clover High School football scrimmage game at 7:30 p.m. against Hunter Huss. Concessions will be half price, and each school will have a tent to provide information and give out supplies.

“We think it’s going to be a great family fun night,” Brown-Canty said.

Brown-Canty said all schools will be represented. Students will pick up book bags filled with supplies at their school’s booth, and can meet school representatives.

“They are so excited when they receive a book bag and meet teachers and principals,” she said. “They really feel special.”

Parents and students will be able to learn about resources and get information about transportation, Connected Classrooms and more, while having fun with activities such as face painting, games and munching on treats like popcorn.

“It’s extremely important for our students,” Brown-Canty said of the school supply drive. “They really benefit from those donations. It makes sure they are prepared first day of school and carry on for a successful academic school year.”

She said last year was the largest distribution with more than 500 book bags with supplies distributed.

“We’ve always given supplies, but not on the scale it is now,” she said.

So far, she said, donation drop-offs have been slow at the three locations.

“We’re usually getting things by now,” she said.

Monetary donations also are needed, because it helps “to purchase items we don’t have enough of.”

Some items Brown-Canty said they tend to run out of include paper and colored folders with pockets and prongs.

“We also are always looking for book bags,” she said.

Brown-Canty is sure donations will come.

“This area is just tremendous with support for the school, and we really appreciate,” she said.
