Williams Road to re-open, Hensley to close for bypass construction
Once one detour ends on the south side of Fort Mill, another will begin.
South Carolina Department of Transportation announced recently that a portion of Hensley Road will be closed beginning Aug. 3. The closed area stretches from just east of Featherson Road to just east of Legion Road. The road should re-open Nov. 6.
The detour will be Williams Road, which itself is closed now. Both closures are part of the Southern Bypass project in Fort Mill, which will connect Fort Mill Parkway to Springfield Parkway. Hensley won’t be closed until Williams re-opens.
“This closure is contingent on the completion of the construction work being performed at the intersection of Williams Road and Fort Mill Southern Bypass intersection,” reads the SCDOT notice. “This work is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 3.”
The final stage of the bypass is years in the making. In 1997, voters in York County approved the first Pennies for Progress referendum which included $14.6 million for the Fort Mill Northern Bypass from S.C. 160 to Deerfield Road.
In 2003 voters approved $26.5 million each for two stretches, one from Fort Mill Parkway to Holbrook Road and the other from Holbrook to S.C. 160. The 2011 campaign included $4.7 million for an intersection improvement at Fort Mill Parkway and Spratt Street.
