Lake Wylie Children’s Charity is holding a boat poker run Aug. 15 with stops at T-Bones on the Lake, Harbortowne Marina, Red Fez Club and Commodore Yacht Club before a final stop and after party at the North Carolina sandbar.

All stops are by boat. A party at T-Bones will be 7-9 p.m. Aug. 14, with registration beginning at noon Aug. 15 at the restaurant. Boats will head out between 1 and 3 p.m., all returning by 5 p.m.

The main event will be a benefit concert Oct. 4 on the lawn at T-Bones on the Lake. A poker run on land will be held in September.

DNR offers boating virtual trainer

A new Boating Skills Virtual Trainer is being offered as part of a partnership between the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and Pioneer Boats.

With the assistance of Pioneer Boats, DNR placed three 32-inch screens on a center console boat, mounted inside a trailer, for a virtual boating experience. Steering, throttle and other controls are like those found on a real boat.

The instructor can tailor the student’s experience by adjusting wind and current strength to day/night scenarios. Students can learn about docking, mooring, pivot turns and more on a virtual waterway free from the hazards that can occur on the water.

Marine commission seeks Eagle hopeful

The Lake Wylie Marine Commission is looking for a Scout seeking Eagle rank or other honors for a lake service project.

The commission would like for a local Scout to set up containers for collecting used fishing wire to keep it out of the water.
