Turner cherishes coaching days in Clover
Former Clover head football coach Jet Turner, who guided the Blue Eagles to the 2007 Division 11 4A state championship, returned to Memorial Stadium Aug. 6 as head coach of the Broome Centurions.
Broome and Clover squared off in a morning scrimmage.
“We’ve had a good experience at Broome,” Turner said. “I really enjoy Broome. We’ve been able to take a program that was 1-10 in 2A to the region championship two years ago in 3A.”
Turner, who’s had success in the double-wing alignment, has altered his offensive philosophies at Broome.
“We’re running a lot more option now,” he said. “We still run some double-wing stuff. We do a lot of split-back option and try to do some different things to take advantage of the personnel I have at Broome.”
Turner compares some of his top players to former Blue Eagle players.
“I’ve had some running backs that remind me a lot of the kids I had at Clover,” he said. “Great kids, tough kids that run angry, just really a joy to coach.”
Turner, who left Clover in 2011, said he still keeps up with the team.
“It’s a great place. I’m excited to come back and scrimmage here,” he said. “It’s great to see coach Hester and those guys. Coach Smith is doing a great job. You can see the improvement. They do things the right way.”
