School notes: Assistant principal named at Crowders Creek Elementary School

Crowders Creek Elementary assistant principal named

Scott Sinclair has been named the new assistant principal for pre-kindergarten through second grade at Crowders Creek Elementary School.

Before rising to his former role of assistant principal at Riverview Elementary School in Fort Mill, Sinclair spent nine years in the guidance department. Sinclair is a South Carolina native and Winthrop University graduate, having earned two master’s degrees – one in counseling and development and the other education administration.

Sinclair will fill the role vacated by George Smith, who joined the administrative staff at Kinard Elementary School.

He and his wife Kate have two children, Lily and Eliza.

Garden class offered for home-schooled students

The Clemson Extension Service in York County and city of Rock Hill will host the 4-H Come Grow With Me in the Garden series, September through December for home-schooled students ages 6-14.

Classes will be held at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. the second Friday of each month. Students will learn about horticulture, vegetable gardening and leadership through activities and a service project. Cost is $65.

The registration and fee deadline is Sept. 8 and includes a 2015-2016 4-H yearly membership. For information, call 803-684-9919.

Farm Bureau names scholarship winners

Arthur Q. Black, president of York County Farm Bureau, announces three winners of the $1,000 York County Farm Bureau scholarship for 2015-’16.

The recipients are:

▪  John Wesley Edmunds III, son of Mary and Wesley Edmunds of Clover, entering his junior year at Clemson University. He is majoring in biological sciences.

▪  Hayley Elizabeth Boyd, daughter of Christie and Roy H Boyd III of Rock Hill, entering her junior year at Clemson University. She is majoring in pre-veterinary science.

▪  Robert Henry Mitchell, son of Bill and Marie Mitchell of York, entering his junior year at Winthrop University. He is majoring in general business.

This scholarship is awarded to a resident of York County based on character, demonstrated leadership abilities and dedication to agriculture or a related field, after completing his or her first semester at a four-year college or university.

Host blood drive, earn scholarship

▪ High school and college students can win a scholarship by hosting an American Red Cross blood drive through Aug. 31 through the Leaders Save Lives program.

The Leaders Save Lives program encourages community-minded 16- to 24-year-olds to host blood drives. Students who participate as a blood drive coordinator are eligible to win a scholarship up to $2,500 for higher education and to earn a gift card.

Ten scholarships will be awarded via a drawing to students who achieve 100 percent of their blood drive collections goal. All students who achieve the designated blood drive goal will receive an electronic gift card to giftcertificates.com.

▪ The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is calling on high school and college students for its seventh annual Students Saving Summer Scholarship Program.

Students who organize and host a successful blood drive with CBCC through Sept. 30 have the chance to earn scholarship money for their secondary education. The top five producing blood drives each receive a $1,000 scholarship from CBCC. Since 2009, CBCC has awarded more than 300 scholarships and grants.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must choose a location, recruit donors and collect a minimum of 25 units of blood. Each student will be paired up with a CBCC representative who will provide assistance with planning the blood drive. The CBCC scholarship donation must be directly transferred to the college, university or other learning establishment of each winner’s choice.
