A Saturday in the South on one of the last summer days of the year. Could it get any better?

Add barbecue and some terrific deals, and it might be the most perfect Saturday of the year.

Grace Presbyterian Church will have its 16th annual yard sale, barbecue and bake sale Aug. 29. The yard sale and bake sale begin at 7 a.m. and end at noon. BBQ meals will be sold from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., including child and adult plates as well as pork by the pound.

The yard sale has grown each year. Items come from members of the congregation. In previous years, furniture has been plentiful, from couches to children’s furniture and chairs. A kayak was a hot item for sale last year, and accent pieces, including rugs and lamps, are also easy to spot.

An entire room is dedicated to books, with hardcover and paperbacks lining the walls and tables, including genres from young adult to religious texts and modern literature.

For many people, the barbecue is the star of the show, said church member Ryan Mitcheson.

“Grace is all about family. Like any good family, you’ve got to have a good meal at least once a year,” Mitcheson said.

Funds raised from the event support the church and its efforts, including local missions, such as Renew Our Community, the Fort Mill Care Center and Thornwell Home for Children. It’s also a great time of fellowship for the church members and community, Mitcheson said.

“It’s about our church family working together, laughing together, and eating some really great barbecue,” he said.

“I know you can find good barbecue all over the Carolinas, but what makes ours really special is that not only do you get to enjoy the food but you also get to leave knowing that the money you spent is also going to help support a group of folks trying to do some good in the world and spread some love – and barbecue sauce – while we’re at it.”
