Lions award distinguished service

Randy Watson was honored for living up to the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club’s We Serve motto during his 20 years as a member.

Among the fundraising activities he has participated in are Christmas tree sales and soliciting advertisers for the phone directory. He also served as the club’s program director and is on the Greens and Grounds committee.

This month, the club awarded him the Lions Distinguished Service Award.

A native of North Carolina, Watson graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State. After years in electrical sales in Charlotte, he retired and moved to River Hills. He is married to wife Susan, and one of his children, Jennifer Roberts, is a candidate in Charlotte’s mayoral race.

In other club news:

▪ $10,000 raffle: The Lions will hold a raffle this fall with one prize: $10,000. Only 300 raffle tickets will be sold, at a cost of $100 each, with the winning ticket being drawn at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at River Hills Country Club. The winner need not be present to win. The raffle will benefit River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS, which offers free services or payable through patient’s insurance in the Lake Wylie area. Tickets are available at River Hills Community Association office, or by calling 803-818-1729 or 803-831-8683.

▪ The club continues to hold free eye screenings. The program, Lions Kidsight USA, uses state-of-the-art Welch Allyn camera capable of checking for six potential eye problems. Parental consent is required. If a referral is recommended for a child, printed documentation the results will be sent to the facility. Hear about zoning plan Sept. 1

York County’s Planning & Development Services will discuss the proposed draft ordinance at the Sept. 1 Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5220 Crowders Creek Road.

The proposed changes can be seen at yorkcountygov.com/planninganddevelopment.

The meeting is from noon to 1 p.m. Lunch costs $10.

David Hamilton, clerk of court, and Kevin Brackett, solicitor for York County, will talk about additional funding for the Moss Justice Center and Family courts at the Sept. 8 meeting.

River Hills Women’s group to meet

The River Hills Women’s Club will meet Sept. 16 for its monthly luncheon at River Hills Country Club.

The club is a social organization for women who live in River Hills or are a member of the River Hills Country Club. Each month September through May, the club has a luncheon (with the exception of January) at the country club. Interest groups include dinner and lunch groups, book and garden clubs, Bridge, sew and chat and more.

Returning and new members should pay annual dues of $20 to Sandy Shaffer at 32 Catawba Ridge Road.

Clover Jaycees plan auto show, fall festival

The Clover Jaycees and the town of Clover will host the annual auto show and fall festival Sept. 19 on Main Street in downtown Clover.

Vendor applications are being accepted for crafts, children’s activities and food.

The auto show features more than 45 classes, with awards presented for Best Paint, Best Engine, Best Interior, Best Club Participation and Furthest Distance Traveled. A Best of Show trophy is presented in memory of the late Dwayne Adams.

Registration for the auto show begins at 8 a.m. The cost is $20 in advance, or $25 day of the event.

A parking lot party featuring music by Finally Friday is 6:30-10 p.m. in the Bi-Lo parking lot. Bring lawn chairs.
