Column: Indian Land Senior Center always lively
Today really is the first day of the rest of your life and if you don’t believe me, visit the Indian Land Senior Center at the Indian Land Recreation Center.
I enjoy visiting the seniors at the center. Julie Morgan is the manager and she keeps things hopping. The topic of discussion when I was there last week was walking in general and the benefits of the elderly walking in particular. Morgan reiterated why walking was so beneficial to the elderly: it improves your mood, builds stronger bones and – one of my favorites – reduces stress.
They walk in the gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Myrtle Douglas is the goodwill ambassador at the center and sitting at her table is always a treat. They talk politics, the stock market and keep up with local and national news. Everyone has an opinion and they are not afraid to say what they feel.
They took a bus trip to the Kershaw Senior Center last week to compete in a talent show with other senior citizens in Kershaw and Lancaster counties. The hot weather certainly doesn’t stop them.
They invited me to a special presentation of The Copy Cats lip synch group on Oct. 2. The Cats are one of their favorites. They have entertainment on a weekly basis at the center and residents at Sun City share a lot of their talent with them.
If you are an elderly resident or if you are new to the community, stop by and see all they have to offer at the Indian Land Recreation Center.
Morgan asked that I send out a request for drivers to deliver Meals on Wheels. They have a need for several people to deliver hot meals to the elderly residents who are homebound. Please call Morgan at 803-802-4653.
