Oakridge Middle School volleyball and football teams compete

▪ On Sept. 8, the eighth grade Oakridge Middle School volleyball team defeated York in two games, 25-23 and 25-17. The team had eight aces, six kills and three assists: Lakyn Seamster had 2 aces with 3 kills; Blair Abernathy had 3 aces with 2 kills; Maggie Payne had 1 ace and 1 kill; Maggie Wilson had 1 ace with 3 assists; Brooklyn Gun had 1 ace and played outstanding defense.

▪ On Sept. 8, the seventh grade volleyball team defeated York Middle School in two of three sets. In the third set OMS won by six points. Abby Welborn and Kailee Long excelled at serving. Alexa Smith made strong plays at setter.

▪ The eighth grade football team opened Sept. 9 with a 14-8 win against York. On the Golden Eagles’ first offensive play of the game, Drew Moore beat the York defenders on a 42-yard run for the first score of the game. He also scored on the 2-point conversion, putting Oakridge up 8-0. Later in first quarter, York scored on fourth down with a 10-yard run.

Early in second quarter, OMS Drew Moore hit Zion Robbins with a pass for a 60-yard touchdown. The game was then delayed for an hour and a half due to storms. On York’s final drive of the game, the team busted its longest play of the night (a 40-yard pass), but the Cougar wide receiver was tracked down around the 20-yard line. A few plays later on fourth down, Oakridge defense put pressure on the York quarterback forcing an incompletion sealing the victory for the Golden Eagles. Offensively, Oakridge was led by Drew Moore and Zion Robbins on the ground. Blackmon Huckabee had a good game under center and an interception on defense. Hayden Johnson, Drew Moore, Zion Robbins and Comorey Mikell led the team in tackling. Garrett Hawkins and Jay Falls did a great job on pass coverage.

▪ The seventh grade football team won against York on Sept. 9 at Oakridge Middle School. The Golden Eagles jumped to an early lead, but York regained the lead 32-20 into the fourth. The Eagles scored a touchdown to make it 32-26. After a stop on fourth down, Oakridge got the ball to 30-yard line, where the drive encountered the York defense. With 22 seconds to go and fourth down looming, Austin Stroup spun out of a Cougar tackle, and scored the game-tying touchdown. Austin then punched in the 2-point conversion to make the score 34-32. On offense: Austin Stroup 17 rushes, 168 yards 4 TDs, 3 2-point conversions; Noah Caulder 9 rushes, 57 yards; John Robert Good 1 rush, 1 yards; Baker Womack 3 rushes, 3 yards. On defense: Austin Stroup 11 tackles, 1 interception for a TD; Noah Caulder 2 tackles; Grey Nixon 2 tackles; Baker Womack 4 tackles; Jacob Frey 1 tackle; Grayson Hall 1 tackle; Aaron Vannavong 1 tackle.

▪ On Sept. 10, the eighth grade OMS volleyball team defeated Springfield Middle School in three games: 17-25, 24-23 and 15-11. Brooklyn Gunn, 5 service points and 1 kill; Blair Abernathy, 5 service points with 1 ace; Dakota Peters, 9 service points with 2 kills; Maggie Wilson, 11 service points with 10 assists; Lakyn Seamster, 12 service points with 2 aces and 3 kills; Maggie Payne, 6 service points with 1 ace and 3 kills; and Ann Mason McConnell played games 2 and 3.

▪ On Sept. 10, OMS seventh grade volleyball team lost to Springfield Middle School. Teh team lost but won the second 25-17. The third game the Golden Eagles fell to the Mustangs 15-9. Kailee Long served well with Mae McKinney and Cierra Hill adding serves of their own.
