Column: Do you remember?

1995

▪ The town of Fort Mill and the American Legion were in a snit concerning a $400,000 project that would link northern Lancaster County with Fort Mill’s wastewater treatment system. The proposed route was planned to cut through legion property on Legion Road.

▪ Fort Mill’s football team defeated Lewisville 20-14 in overtime on a rain soaked Fort Mill High School field. Holder Lee Fand scored the winning touchdown on a botched field goal attempt.

▪ The Indian Land High School marching band captured the title in its class at the Burger King Marching Band Classic in Rock Hill.

▪ Fort Mill’s girls’ tennis team improved to 5-1 after defeating York 6-1 and Chester 7-0.

1975

▪ Fort Mill lost one of its oldest homes to fire. The old Pettus home in the Gold Hill section of Fort Mill was believed to be at least 150 years old.

▪ Joe M. Belk, Fort Mill native, was hired as the trombone instructor at Winthrop College. Belk was also principal trombonist with the Charlotte Symphony.

▪ The Rev. Harvey Allen Hester was named as the first full time pastor at the Tega Cay Church of Today.

▪ Oct. 1 was set as the first day applications would be taken for Fort Mill’s new low-income housing development on Highway 160 East, Fort Mill.

1955

▪ Luther G. Patterson announced the joining of Patterson’s Grocery and the Red and White Food Group and would operate as Patterson’s Red and White Food Store.

▪ Fort Mill’s Yellow Jackets, coached by Pete Reynolds, dropped to 0-3 after losing to Clover’s Blue Eagles, 25-6.

1935

▪ Sen. Huey Pierce Long Jr., aka the Louisiana Dictator, was assassinated in the corridor of the Louisiana State House.

▪ The treasury of Fort Mill received a number of fines and forfeitures as a result of the work of Officer A.R. McElhaney.

1915

▪ Information from 40 markets in South Carolina indicated that there was an unprecedented rise in gasoline prices. Prices were 20 cents to 25 cents a gallon, up as much as 7 cents in some markets.

▪ Fort Mill National Guardsmen Capt. S. W. Parks, Lt. George Potts and Sgt. William Belk won places on the state rifle team.
