Oakridge Middle School football, volleyball teams see triumphs and losses
▪ The Oakridge Middle School eighth grade volleyball team played Sept. 26 in the annual Bearcat Tournament. All players made a contribution to the 5-3 pool play record as the team advanced to the silver bracket and placed second with a loss in the finals to Rawlinson Road Middle School. Overall the Lady Eagles placed sixth out of 10 teams. Dakota Peters was honored as an All-Tournament player with 16 aces and 5 kills.
▪ The seventh grade volleyball team won two of three sets against Springfield Middle, 25-17, 24-26 and 15-11 on Sept. 29. Alexa Smith set up the ball and served a number of aces in a row. Alina Tomko and Amelia McCauley both had strong attacks on the ball at the net. All the girls displayed pass control and gave the ball to the setter.
▪ The OMS eighth grade football team lost 35-28 Sept. 30 to Banks Trail. The scoring went back and forth throughout the game. Down by 9 entering the fourth quarter, OMS made the 2-point conversion bringing the Golden Eagles within one point. On the ensuing kickoff, Oakridge attempted an onside kick, and it was recovered by Corey Dragun. Oakridge drove down the field, but turned the ball over inside the 15-yard line. That was the Golden Eagles’ fourth turnover of the night. Banks Trail tacked on another touchdown with more than a minute remaining. Contributing for the Golden Eagles were: Drew Moore, 100 rushing yards, 70 receiving yards, 24 passing yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 PATs; Zion Robbins, 89 rushing yards, 84 receiving yards, 1 TD; Tay Cupe, 12 rushing yards; and Blackmon Huckabee, 5 for 9 passing for 130 yards, 1 TD.
▪ The Golden Eagles seventh grade football team defeated Banks Trail 44-16 at home Sept. 30. Austin Stroup started off the scoring by galloping 75 yards for a touchdown. On defense, Baker Womack tipped a Banks Trail pass, and JR Good dove on the ground to intercept the ball. Noah Caulder scored, and the Golden Eagles led 14-0. Jacob Frey recovered a fumble snap, and Caulder and Good scored touchdowns to put the game out of reach. Oakridge racked up 4 turnovers. Golden Eagles contributing to the win were: Rhyan Cheatham, 3 rushes, 5 yards; JR Good 7 rushes, 47 yards, 1 TD, 2 2-pt conversions; Harper Love, 6 rushes, 36 yards, 2 of 4 passing, 57 yards 1 TD, 1 2pt conversion; Noah Caulder, 14 rushes, 96 yards, 2 TDs, 3 catches, 17 yards TD; Austin Stroup, 4 rushes, 129 yards, 1 TD, 1 for 1 passing, 14 yards; and Baker Womack, 7 rushes, 24 yards, 1 TD. The defense was led by: JR Good, 1 tackle, 2 INTs; Rhyan Cheatham, 1 tackle; Austin Stroup, 3 tackles; Deshaun Pooler, 1 tackle; Noah Caulder, 1 INT; Giancarlo Crovetti, 1 tackle; Jacob Frey, 2 tackles, 1 fumble recovery; Grayson Hall, 1 tackle; Aaron Vannavong, 2 tackles; and Jordan Moore, 1 tackle.
▪ The seventh grade OMS volleyball team worked together Oct. 1 to defeat Banks Trail in two sets, 25-17, 25-20. Setters,Alexa Smith and Kailee Long worked hard at the net blocking and then setting up the hits by Alina Tomko, Amelia McCauley and Angel Jones.
▪ The OMS eighth grade volleyball team was outplayed by Banks Trail team, with OMS losing both sets: 6-25, 14-25. The ladies played great defense. Season record stands 5-3.
