OMS names staff member of month

Jennifer Dundr has been selected as the September Staff Member of the Month for Oakridge Middle School.

Originally from Cleveland, Dundr attended Bluffton College and received a master’s degree from Baldwin Wallace University. She has been teaching 18 years, 11 of those in Clover.

Husband Christopher also teaches at OMS. They have two children, Gavyn, a third-grader at Crowders Creek, and Jayden, a first-grader at Larne.

The award is sponsored by Family Trust Credit Union.

41 PES students qualify for Duke TIP

Palisades Episcopal School announces 41 of 64 fourth- through eighth-graders qualified for the 2015-16 Duke Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP).

Lake Wylie students are: Andrew DeWeese, Samantha DeWeese, Ellen Hamilton, Nathan Hughes, Palmer Manley, Emilie Claire Nason, Alex Owings, Gardenia Roberts, Gabriela Salas, Natalia Salas and Katherine Stewart.

To qualify for Duke TIP, students must score in the 95th percentile or better on a national standardized test. As part of the Duke TIP program, students become eligible to take the ACT or SAT in seventh grade, and are offered the opportunity to participate in a wide range of enrichment courses from summer seminars, to eStudies distance learning programs, to academic competitions, to Duke TIP’s renowned Summer Studies Program. Recognized students also receive access to specialized publications and resources for gifted learners.

Lake Wylie senior earns national merit

Two Gaston Christian School seniors, including one from Lake Wylie, have been named commended students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship program, which recognizes exceptional academic performance on the qualifying test.

Austin Purtell, the son of Mark and Ingrid Purtell of Lake Wylie, is a member of National Honor Society, National Beta Club, Chess Club and International Club. He also plays on the varsity soccer team and the Varsity Boys Tennis team, and has volunteered as a coach with youth soccer programs.

Gaston Day Fall Festival Oct. 17

The Gaston Day School Fall Festival has been rescheduled due to the weather forecast from Oct. 3 to 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 17 at 2001 Gaston Day School Road.

Wristbands in advance are $25, or $30 at the door, and include unlimited games and rides. Individual rides or games cost $1 each.

Class of ’85 reunion Nov. 7

The Clover High School Class of 1985 is having a 30th reunion at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at T-Bones on the Lake in Lake Wylie.
