Scout’s project helps Steele Creek school
James Kyle Johns of Boy Scout Troop 45 renovated three outdoor classrooms and a walking trail for Steele Creek Elementary School. He was sponsored by Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church.
The project included cutting overgrowth from the classroom sites, clearing a trail, building bench seats for the classrooms and spreading mulch. The project was completed in time for the school year opening.
Gregg Petty, science facilitator at the school, said the classrooms are seeing a lot of use, including his as he has taken students out to the classrooms every day.
Johns is a senior at Fort Mill High School, serves as his troop’s senior patrol leader, and is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.
ACC sales director to speak at Rotary
Jeff Kauzlarich, director of corporate sales with the Atlantic Coast Conference, will speak at the noon Oct. 13 Lake Wylie Rotary Club meeting.
He focuses on developing relationships within the Charlotte business community through the new and exclusive ACC Membership Clubs. The ACC Charlotte office is in the Raycom Sports Building in uptown Charlotte.
Before joining the ACC, Kauzlarich spent eight years working in sales roles in professional sports, including stints with the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Timberwolves. He also was an employee of the Florida Sports Foundation in Tallahassee, Fla.
A Minnesota native, he attended college at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and The United States Sports Academy. He now lives in Charlotte.
Woman’s Club to learn about CAAC
The Clover Woman’s Club will meet at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Clubhouse, 234 Church St.
The program will be presented by Karen van Vierssen, executive director for Clover Area Assistance Center. She will share how the club can support the agency as it ministers to the needs of the community. Members are asked to bring nonperishable food items and paper products to donate. Items especially needed are canned fruits, boxed cereal and toilet paper.
The theme of the month is Pretty in Pink and members are encouraged to wear pink.
Mayday Project golf tourney Oct. 12
The fifth annual Lake Wylie/Clover Mayday Project Charity Golf Tournament will be Oct. 12 at River Hills Country Club.
Check-in time is 10:30 a.m.-noon. Entry fee costs $90 per player and includes a cart, lunch and awards dinner. Entry forms are available at River Hills Country Club Pro Shop or by calling 704-301-4848.
Money raised will go to help homeless and families in need in the Clover and York school districts.
River Hills Women’s group to meet
The River Hills Women’s Club’s Oct. 21 luncheon will feature Jackie Wagner of the Daughters of the American Revolution at River Hills Country Club.
This is a social group for women who live in River Hills or are a member of the River Hills Country Club. Interest groups include Book Club, Garden Club, Beginners Bridge, Couples Bridge and Sew and Chat.

Troop 333 selling popcorn
Lake Wylie Troop 333, which meets at River Hills Community Church, is gearing up for its annual popcorn fundraiser. Each Scout will sell popcorn through Oct. 23.
Scouts will be at Lowe’s in Lake Wylie on Oct. 10. Proceeds go to troop activities including camp-outs, supplies and operating costs.
Registration underway for Oct. 24 Mummy Shuffle
Registration is underway for the fourth annual Clover Rotary Club Mummy Shuffle 5K fun run and walk on Saturday, Oct. 24. Entry fee is $15 in advance and $20 on the day.
Participants who register before Oct. 14 will be guaranteed a race T-shirt. Registration and check-in will begin at 8 a.m. in front of the First Baptist Church COAC building, 111 S. Main St., Clover.
The race will start at 8:30 a.m. Awards will be given for race winners and best costumes.

Shriners’ Fall Bazaar Oct. 25
Red Fez Shrine Club Fall Bazaar open house is 2-5 p.m. Oct. 25 at the club, 16600 Red Fez Club Road.
There will be more than 20 outside vendors, such as Mary Kay, Pampered Chef and Thirty One, at the one-stop shop event.
4-H seeks leaders
York County 4-H is seeking volunteers to lead clubs and short-term projects in sporting clays, shotgun, photography, finance, robotics, small pets and healthy lifestyles.

Sweet Repeat names charity groups
Sweet Repeat Charitable Foundation has named groups that received donations this year.
The group donated $71,000 to several charities: Camp Thunderbird, Canine Companions, Children’s Attention Home, Chrysalis Autism Center, Clover Area Assistance Center, God’s Kitchen, Herman Presbyterian Church, Hospice Community Care, Lake Wylie Children’s Charity, Lake Wylie Library, Make A Wish Foundation, Mia Via Inc., Misty Meadows Mighty Riders, Pilgrim’s Inn, Respect for Life Ministries, Richardson Rescue, RideAbility Therapeutic Riding Center, River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS, The Haven Men’s Shelter and York County Adult Day Care.
The club also awarded three scholarships to Clover High School students.

The group raises money through its thrift store at 4082B Charlotte Highway in Lake Wylie Plaza. Hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The store accepts gently-used clothing, furniture, kitchen items, jewelry and more.
New members are welcome. Annual dues cost $20, and members are required to work six hours a month at the shop. Applications are available at the store.
